factory tinted windows...

Post by retro »

Does anybody know if there are different types of factory tinted glass, or are they all the same? I know the Genesis had tints, but were there diferent colours? Did any of the Mk2's have tints?

I've looked in a few scrappies, but none of the Polo's I've seen had tinted windows. All I need is the little triangular piece from the front of the passenger door, but they seem surprisingly elusive.

The problem I have is that some reprobate broke a window and it had to get replaced with a clear piece, which looks a bit odd since the rest of the glass is the factory tinted type.

I'm hoping that all the tints are the same shade, so when I eventually find a piece it will match all the rest. Plus if any Mk2's share the same glass i can broaden my search a bit.

the genesis that i bought to brake has got factory tints and theyve got numbers at the bottom unnder where it says tinted (cannay remember if it says 1 or 3). looks as though previous owner hadd same problem as you because the 1/4 light isnt VW like the other glass but is a proper match so u might be able to get some from a window replacement place (autoglass?) my gt has got 1 window thats tinted and is slightly lighter than the genisis but is VW and has the number 2 under the word tinted. not much help i know but i spose at least u know theres gradiants in tints.
arent mk3 and mk2 doors the same? cuz then if u found a mk2 it should fit in the mk3 and visa versa

hmm, interesting... mine don't seem to have any nuber relating to the shade of tint. They have a couple of serial / part numbers and the tinted ones say 'tinted' at the bottom.

I think at this point, I'll have to settle for any tinted piece I can find, with the theory that any tinted piece is going to be better than the clear one that's there now.

You're right D4V1D, the Mk2 glass will fit, but does anybody know if the Mk2 ever had factory tinted windows?

All I can think of is special editions, as I don't think it came on the standard trim models on Mark2s. Thats a guess, but its worth a try.

Right, I have done a bit of research, on one of the best sites for Polo info: http://www.geeforty.freeserve.co.uk/historyframes2.htm. Apparently 1988 examples of the Coupe Boulevard featured tinted glass, then from '89 all mark2s featured tinted glass.

Hope that helps.

Like whats been said, all late mk2s had tinted glass as standard. Theres only tinted and untinted I think, not different colours as far as I know. Its very rare to find a non-genesis mk3 with tinted windows. Other late models such as the match parade and boulevard may have had them but Im not sure. They were an option on all models tho, my blue GT's got them.

Thanks everyone.

So, to sum up, tinted windows were fitted to all late model Mk2's and Mk3 Genesis models, plus maybe on a few other special editions.

You'd think that wouldn't be too hard to find wouldn't you? Well, I hope it's at least cheap when I eventually do find one.
