New Golf Recaros fitted (kinda)

Post by TriggerFish »

Hi all,

I got a set of Golf 4 Recoros the other day for the Polo for the tidy price of £100 - a bargin considering they're modded to fit a 6n already! :D

Where I'm stuck is the rear seat backs - I can't get them in! I know someone on here has them in already, and I think I saw mention of a guide on how to fit them, but I can't find it now!

If anyone can shed any light, you'd make my day!

This could be like the mk3 interior where they unclog the covers and swap them over so you have polo backs with mk4 covers :) just an idea

I was thinking this, but hoping there would be an easier way than doing that!

Driving round with just the drivers seat atm - amazing how much more noise there is, although it makes the exhaust sound epic!

That's not particularly a hard one to do anyway. I can't see any other way around it really because there's no way the mk4's will fit straight In the rear. Google it man ;)

Will a proper look at trying that tomorrow. I know some people have done it so thought I'd ask (think it's endi on here with them).

I tried google, it's just nay sayers saying it's a lot of work to do the fronts, but nothing of interest about the rears.

Its annoying, the Recaros are only an inch too big as well... :(

I created a love child out of the polo seats and the golf seats. I used the Polo metal rears, the golf foam and golf cover. Some slight foam trimming is required however nothing a bread knife wont cope with

Use the locking pin from the polo. the only thing that is annoying is that the golf lever to put the seats down is huge and when you put the polo one in there is a huge hole. I am still yet to do something about it but i will be sending the lot to my local trimmer who do something with it. Any questions mate, give me a PM or something 8)

Cheers Matt, very helpful!

I've got the Polo seats apart now, so I've got the frame ready to take the Golf one, the question I have is, how did you get the tubes/seat lever out of the Golf backrest? I've had a go, but I think I'm just going to break it as I'm just using force and ignorance (never mix well!).

Might spray the foam black around where the seat release pin goes, try and hide the hole a little bit in the short term. . .

Thanks,
Joe

No worries Joe. I can't actually properly remember how I got mine out. I think I did just yank them in the end and they came out. Or maybe there was something that had to be squeezed in in order to release it. For the pin, I think I just removed the rubber bit of the mechanism and then rethreaded it on. I should have really documented how I went about doing this mod but im sure you will figure it out 8)

Hmm, thanks.

Will have to have a look tomorrow after uni I guess. I'll take some pictures as I go along, might help someone at some point in the future! Probably something really simple I'm missing!

Right, got the backs sorted now! Thanks for any help given.

Was just a case of swapping the foam/covers over, and trimming down the plastic clips that hold it in place on the outside of the seat as they were blocking the latch, and it was done!

Got the Polo release bit in place, and got some spare fabric from my trimming to cover the hole left by the Golf latch. Will get some pictures tomorrow when the bases are in to show what I mean.

Just in case anyone else ever finds it useful (mainly as I couldn't find this on Google!): the disassembly of a Golf 4 Recaro seat back is done by using a screw driver to prise the edge of the fabric away from the back as it's just held on with plastic clips. Once these are all undone, the head rest tubes are released by a small tab on the under/hidden side of the tube. Press this in, and pull the tube out. On one set, you can't get to these, so I my dad just forced the tabs out of place by forcing a screw driver in from above (this can render them useless!).

To get the seat latch out, I found the fabric can just be teased out around it once you've got the headrest tubes out as it gives you more slack to work with. The latch mech is still on the seat back, but it lets you get the foam/covers off fully.
The centre seat belt is just freed by levering the surround bit you can see from the fabric side of the seat. Then you can just slide the buckle through the resulting hole in the fabric.

I didn't need to do any trimming of the foam at all.

Hopefully that helps someone in the future!
