Looking to fit these coilovers the weekend, and I have all neccesary tools to fit EXCEPT spring compressors.
So are they absolutely needed? Or can I get to the top mount without?

They are not a MUST for fitting coilovers its replacing springs when they are essential

I've never used spring compressors when removing springs on a VW...
Just undo the top first and then raise the car and you can "pull" down the whole thing so the spring isn't compressed. then undo to two bolts at the bottom and pull the damper and spring out,

It's a nice chunk out of your hand if you're doing dampers (i do mean dampers) that sit in a cup(mkiv golf) but for the few polos, lupo and corsas I've done they're not as essential still canny handy though just to keep it safer.
