Are you sure the box is gone, it must have been on its way out for sometime because they dont tend to just suddenly break.
I drove mine for about 3 months when it was going, as long as it goes in & out of gear then you wont have any problems driving it 6 miles

Managed to get it to the garage this morning, the noises were horrific 
Had it confirmed that the box has gone....could be the end of the road for me and my GTi
I just don't think I'm up for putting another recon box in, especially as it was due to go in tomorrow for a suspected air compressor problem (££££).
Anyway, I'm leaning towards trading in what's left of it for a Golf GT TDi that currently resides on their forecourt.
Had it confirmed that the box has gone....could be the end of the road for me and my GTi

The smell was a gassy/clutchy/decomposing flesh kind

The box is the most common fault for the GTI's but you probably knew that before buying one
Dont let it put you off too much, yeah its not the cheapest of jobs to get fixed but if you get a good refurb it shouldnt need doing again.

The smell was probably the box oil. This stud smells revolting anyway

Oh i know how you feel my gearbox went over a month ago now and i am awaiting a quote for it to go in a be repaired it sucks! hope you sort it soon if you decide to keep it
