My 6N - Newbie

Hi, I'm 17, currently still on my provisional but my test is very soon!

Wanted a MK2 Golf as my first car but I knew it wouldn't happen... I currently own a 1997 6N , below are some pictures - I only bought it the other day so only had chance to give it a quick clean and once over. I'm looking to modify it but not too much, just make it look smart! (Any suggestions are welcome!)

Hoping my wax arrives tomorrow so I can give it a good few coats!

nice clean polo uve found

theres the usual stuff to start with, clear indicators, maybe 16v bumpers and taking off rear 'polo' and '1.0L' badges, also door rubbers come off easily too and clean it up more
all depends on personal taste really, id get it decked right down and some new rims, but again upto the individual

Yeah i'd love to get it to the floor, slight problem when it comes to insurance though maybe next year!

What are the badges held on by? Is it just adhesive? Best way to get them off?

Yea just an adhesive holding them on, same with door rub stops
There are different techniques, I use a screw driver wrapped in a cloth and pry at it slowly, once off, use either wd40 or white spirit to get excess adhesive off
And If uve got the money, buy coilovers, improves handling big time, even the cheap ones and then 'for insurance' purposes, they are adjustable so u could say u bought them as replacment, so go low and don't say to insurance, (dr pepper advert here) what's the worst that could happen, coilies gonna make u handle car better so technicly safer to drive

Looks like a great clean 6N to start with, usually a rare find these days as most are rotten

Like everyone else says, start with the easy stuff like badges, trim and maintenance until you can afford the big bits like coilovers/suspension then alloys. I had a MK2 GTi after my 6N as I too couldn't have one to start, absolutely loved the 6N and they are great fun to work and learn on.

Do the rub strips require any filler after taking them off? Just so i know before i go pulling parts off!

So, today i got round to taking the badges off, also gave it a good clean and a coat of wax! Pictures to come tomorrow

So, here she is with the badges off and the adhesive still on, the adhesive took ages to get off and because i tried to rush it chipped my paint slightly


Now, here she is after a wash and coat of wax
