CRUNCH!

Post by Ratty »

No, don't worry, I haven't smashed my car up!

This is the sound my gearbox has made on a few occassions after the past weekend. :(

Ya see, I passed my test Friday afternoon, and have been driving the ol' Polo rather enthusiastically ever since! Anyway, when I put my foot down out of a junction or whatever, once or twice the gearbox has had a bit of a row with the engine!

Can I put this all down to lack of experience, or do any of you sometimes have similar experiences? At least I've got my 3 year warranty to fall back on if I do munch the 'box up completely! 8)

well done on the test
as i keep seeing the vw boxes are far from reliable (josh) so it could be the box but then agin when i was new on the road i made a few mistakes  but dont let it discourage you
oh and just cos youve got your liscence dosent mean you have to try and loose it  remember youve only got 6 points to play with for the first 2 years and if you pass them its bck to a provisional and hello my insurance-whos-about-to-make-me-sell-my-soul-to-insure-my-car

Well done Ratty!! :)

Might just be making a few mistakes every now and then, we all did it, and still do

And listen to 2k, be careful, 6 points isnt much!

Well, I have gearbox problems

I find it quite hard to select reverse (noted by two other people who have driven my car also) and first second and third are a bit 'noisy' on selection, sounds strange I know but its going in for work tomorrow so hopefully I'll find out then.

Re selecting reverse, does it help if you let clutch up, then put it down again??

My SEAT has exactly the same problem. I think it's common with most VW boxes. I find I sometimes have to lift the clutch to get it into reverse. Also there is a sort if know mans land which is sort of in gear but sort of not! Lift the clutch there and crrrrnnnnchh! Done that a few times :( Still works alright though

My gearbox has trouble selecting reverse, it needs a strong arm to get it in... Get it in halfway and it's crunch and grind time. Asked about it once, and it turns out to be common, they wouldn't fix or look at it even.

Oh well.

Thanks for all the replies lads (nice to see you turn up, Mike  ), makes me feel a little better at least!

Thankfully, I haven't managed to do it with any mates in the car...YET! :)

EXACTLY what I get in reverse the whole time. Had that since the car was new. The car's had it checked out by VW and apparently that's what it's like in all their cars. Very annoying. And just when you think you've got it in, start reversing a metre or so and it pops out marginally again.
