Engine Revs Fluctuating

I'm having trouble with my GTi Basically whats happening is that I'll be driving along fine then the revs will drop from 2.5-3k right down to 1k then rapidly back up and down. This'll continue for bout 3secs then go away. Just wondered has any else experienced the same on their GTi at any time and could offer any advice???

Have checked all the usual plugs, oil, water..... no warning lights on the dash at all. Has left me baffled don't wanna take it into VW and get raped for service only to find something that I could've fixed myself. This problem only happens every now and then part from that a sound running motor!

i had kinda the same problem with the revs fluctuating but mine was also cutting out some times
turned out to be the engine speed sensor
anyone with a vag diagnostic plug-in should be able to tell you whats wrong as there should be a fault stored in the ecu memory
