ET50 ? Woh that's kind of a high offset.
It means that when mounted the wheel will be relatively deep inside your wheelarches., with a big chance on scuffing the wheelarches.
ET35 is the standard offset. With ET50 the wheel will be 1,5 cm more inside the wheelarch.
Also it would need adaptors because standard fitting is 5x100 mm.

I would not have a problem running adapters, but I don't know if it's an MOT failure. AFAIK they're safe - never heard anything bad about them, ever.
If you can find an adapter that's 15mm wide, the final offset would be ET35. Which is fine. If you've got 20mm adapters (which are more common) you'll end up with ET 30, which isn't too bad either. If it ends up rubbing, you can always roll the arches or run smaller tyres (i.e. 195-40 instead of 45s).

they're called tangis, they're available in 14" and 15" for the polo and in 16" for the new golf. i've seen the 14"s and i loved them, the 16"s would look even better.
