Footwell / Door leak

Post by dantheram »

I have water creeping in below the speaker on the passenger side of my car. I found a post on a seat leon site which says the panel behind the door card needs resealing but the gti just has a foam panel which isnt exaclty sealed to prevent water.

all drains on the door are clear so it just doesnt make any sense at all, how can water come in when the door is shut if all drains are clear?! :?

Cheers for your research!!

if you look under the glove box on the far left there is a hole where you can feel wiring, i seem to get a drip from there but the amount that pools in the footwell and flows to the back of the car, pooling in the back left footwell is huge. So there must be a bigger non visible leak aswell.

If you put your hand down on the carpet at the rear of the passenger side seat your hand is semi submerged - its that bad now.

It just sodding impossible to find the source!

P.S. ive resealed the pollen filter even tho it did not show any signs of water seeping in.

Hmmm now youve said that I had a similar problem.
Over winter whilst the car was off the road I noticed in the mornings all windows had serious condensation in them, didn't think much of it, then one day when I was hoovering the car I picked up the rear passenger side floor mat to find droplets of water on the underside, I touched the floor and it was soaking wet, from the underneath/side of the front passenger seat, all the way to the floor of the back seat.
First thought was the tubing to the rear wiper jet, as this came apart in my old SE whilst resulted in a puddle under the rear seat bench.
However I'd not used the rear washer jet in months as the car was out I use, and I couldn't find any devisions in the tube anyway.
Had all the rubber seal around the rear door off and actually couldn't find anything wrong.
Put it all back together nice and tightly on. And decided id mention it to one of the VW chaps but forgot.
Weeks later I remembered he wet floor and touched it and it had all dried out.
I still have no idea where it was coming from, or why it stopped.
But I hope you get yours fixed up soon :)

My rear washer burst and drowned the rear left seats/floor too! Had to remove the entire interior to dry it out. Does your rear washer still work? (Use sparingly though!)

If you remove the rear door card on a 3rd, the pipe is behind where that should be:

That black bracket is what the rear seats clip/secure onto. Not sure how that setup works in a 5 door though!

And the amount of work to dry it all out:

Guys,

thanks for the input but i know it cant be the rear washer - i never use it and when i chuck water at the car and watch, from the inside, i can see the water dripping in from a gap at the far left of the glove box.

I've resealed the pollen filter housing and checked the drain that empties on the passenger side wheel arch and all is fine.

The water is coming from high up behind the dash. what places up there have a potential for water to seep through?
