I've had my polo gti 1.4tsi for 1 year (MY2011), done 12,000 miles and used only 8 litres of castrol 5w30 fully synthetic...
That's outrageous consumption.

Modern engines shouldn't use a measurable amount of oil between services.
Yes - that is quite a bit still 1/litre per 1,500 miles. Although that is within tolerance unbelievably. Manual specifies 1/litre for 2000km (1,250 miles).

You must be joking right?

8 liters on 12.000 miles is insane much, modern engines should not consume more then 1 liter every 50.000 miles. Only the TSI's do, because they are so poorly designed.

All of the new cars i have owned in last 15 years (mix of audis, bmws, chryslers) none have ever once needed any oil between services. One of my cars i havent serviced for 35k miles and its just off max on oil.

Using Oil!

Post by gavs »

Mine has now consumed 3litres in 23000 kms (14300miles). In a mix o highway, cross country, city, high speed and spirited mountain driving I think the excuse of "how it's driven" is fairly redundant. As I have said before, it's just poor manufacturing, nothing more.

Yes - completely agree Gavs, I have owned a few new cars over the years and have never had any issues with oil consumption with any of them, until I bought the Polo.

Big mess in Italy after that Quattroruote (monthly magazine) pubblished this article, urged by hundreds of emails sent from our forum and others...

After that I wrote an email to VW Italy and they just called me back.
My question was: "What about my car, that now has a reasonable oil consumption, when warrantee will be expired? Will I have to pay for a repair due to an evident project fault...?"
Their answer, unfortunately by phone so I don't have anything written, was: "VW Germany, VW Italy, all the official dealers and workshops are perfectly aware of the problem, they will act to solve the oil problem for free even if warrantee is expired...

I'm not completely confident on their statement, but it's better than nothing...

I think people are missing the point, 1litre per 1250miles is what the handbook specifies. You have to bare in mind this engine is only a 1.4, has a supercharger and a turbo strapped to it and tweaked a little to squeeze 180ps.

Even if I had to top the oil up every 500 miles it wouldn't bother me, I bought it for the drive not the economy. If your worried about oil usage should of got a blue motion. Just saying

Are you on a different planet, you pay nearly 20k for a small hatch then your constantly filling the oil, that is not right however you look at it.

Also they are not ALL doing it excessively are they? So is it poor design, or poor production? (or bit of both)
Mine arrives friday .... Will it burn oil?? :)

1 liter per 1250 miles is the same specification for all VW engines, also for 1.2 three cylinders...
VW is covering his ass...!

What do you think happens with the oil? It just burns up like petrol? :| Hell no it won't. You keep on driving with a liter every 500 miles, you won't get very far with your engine.

There are MUCH more little hot hatches with small engines with 160 to over 200hp that from factory do not use one single drup of oil. Only the VW's do.

You should first think before you respond, your reactions do not make any sense.

Agree this is nothing to do with the economy (cost of oil) it just shouldn't happen full stop. I dont think people are concerned about the cost of the oil, just the fact its needed in the first place?
