Are we 100% sure on this?

Some folk have said that's the way to do it, I guess I didn't drive it very hard and have ended up with the oil issue

Re: Using Oil!
Just let the oil heat up and give it some spanking a couple of times. Will be better than driving it like an old granny the first miles.

Re: Using Oil!
I do a lot of miles so anything should show up quick. Let the waiting game begin!
Re: Using Oil!
I really think that oil separator [A] has something to do with the oil consumption.
Saying that my GTI has burned only 0.7liters in 10.000Km, yesterday I checked my air intake system and I found something really strange:
The exiting pipe from oil separator and overall the main air intake pipe [C] (just in corrispondence of the separator inlet) where completely wet of oil....
This should not happen!
Look at the pics, especially the last one:

Re: Using Oil!
Why is this not possible? Oil gets pretty hot and the fumes go out trough the ventilation that's connected back into your intake. So you will get oil condensation there. Oil condensation and sludge will build up in your intake, at your injectors etcetera. That's the design VW made. Not so clever, that's for sure.
That's why I hope Forge come with a oil catchtank system soon for the 1.4TSI like they did for the 2.0TSI!

Re: Using Oil!
Vissa, I agree, I understand is possible, every oil seprator works like this.
Once upon a time all cars had the smoking pipe under the engine while running...
The problem is that this seprator doesn't work properly and I really can't understand why VW didn't realize or modify it when the first cases of oil consumption came out (two years ago or more)...
Really can the problem be simple like that? I have some doubts...
The cause of this could be only two from my point of view:
_too much pression in the engine crankcase, due to faulty sealing of piston rings in certain conditions (cold, lower revs, etc.)
_oil separator faulty
Anyway, if it is the real problem, the oil is burned not because of the faulty seal between piston and cylinder (coming from down to combustion chamber, but comes from the intake...
We had a lot of examples that match with this:
_One GTI user in Italy burns 1liter every 1.000Km, but rolling the engine found 181hp: non possible if piston rings are faulty, right?
_A pic of an engine head I posted some months ago showed that it was encrousted after only 3.500kms, but this guy said that pistons were perfect, no glazing or something
_My case is also significant: I use not so much oil (0.7l/10.000Km) but every day coming back home from work, I drive down hill with cold engine for more than 3km.This condition should be the worst if oil pass from crankcase to combustion chamber, but it's not the case...

I did and have a lower oil consumption than most. 7.5k miles and under 2 litres of oil used. Still not as good as I think a car should be though. I ragged it from new and moved to Mobil1 0w40 oil.
Re: Using Oil!
From the huge numbers in complaints over oil consumption from owners of every models of VW around the world, I came to the conclusion the gentle engine break in do not work. My chances of having an oil burning engine is 50% be it gentle or hard run in I concluded.
This is my method of running in and I will report back the results as time goes by.
100km- Load up the engine on various gears below 3000rpm with half throttle.
200km- Occasional full thottle to 5000rpm and load the engine up on manual mode 7th gear with half throttle from 1500rpm tilll 5000rpm.
300km- Find a small hill and climb up using the highest gear possible on manual mode. example 3rd gear 2000rpm 1/4 throttle till peak then cruise down on 2nd gear using engine brake most of the time.
350km - Short burst of sprinting on a long straight road reving till Redline from 1st till 5th gear or speed of around 200km/h then use engine brake to slow to 40km/h then 200km/h again. Total of 3 times. Trying to let the clutch plates settle in also.
500km- Change oil and original filter out replace with cheap American Mobil 1 5W30.
500km- 2 full power dyno run done to get a baseline power.
500-1100km- Drive as normal but daily redline on at least first 3 gears.
1100km- Change oil & filter again using cheap American Mobil 1 5W30. Change DSG Oil!!!
1100km- Did 3 times 0-225km/h pull on the straight highway with 5mins cooling down in between. Did not want to stress the engine too much so let off at 225km/h. Vmax shd be 230km/h.
2100km- Went on highway cross country to fully stretch out the engine and brakes. Did a total of approximately 800km averaging 140-200km/h
2900km- Done a total of 1800km and check the dipstick with engine fully warmed up and parked for 5mins. Still around the max mark or 95% on the dipstick
2920km- Change oil and filter again with Mobil 1 5W30 and planning to go to the same dyno for a power run to compare with the power curve during the previous run.
Points to note.
1. Make sure your oil is at least 90 degrees celcius before you load or rev up your engine.
2. DO NOT IDLE your engine for more than 5mins. Switch it off and restart if possible.
3. After every hard rev, try to use engine brake to slow the car for a few seconds each time.
4. Even though the GTI has a power assisted oil circulation system to cool the turbo bearing down when engine is shut off, try to idle the car for 1min before shutting it down.
4. If you have a mountain around your area, drive up using the highest gear possible and keep rpm to below 3000rpm. Cruise down using engine brake then drive straight to a workshop to have the oil changed out.
5. Follow my method at your own risk but oil change done more often wont hurt anything other than your wallet.

Re: Using Oil!
Does this problem effect other VAG TSI engines?
I'm thinking ahead to the replacement for my 6R GTI, and I quite fancy a Audi A1/A3 122bhp 1.4 TFSI. Is it a similar engine with similar problems?

Re: Using Oil!
its only turbo charged i couldnt find any issues online apart from reviews saying its rather dull compared to a miniStiggy wrote:Does this problem effect other VAG TSI engines?

although the new 1.4tsi 138 which is being shared with the polo blue gt sounds interesting
