1.4 tdi revving up when started and oil light

Post by i-macca »

Hi,

My other half got a 2002 1.4 tdi sport a few weeks ago and we've got a couple of little niggles that hopefully somebody can help with.

The first is that the oil level light (orange) is on despite the level being spot on. We've both checked it numerous times and it's definitely ok. It goes off for a while after its been checked but a quick search on here says that it resets for some time after the bonnet is opened. I suspect the oil level sensor is faulty, how easy are they to change?

The second issue is that sometimes when starting, the car briefly revs up a bit and then back down. My other says it has got more frequent recently though still not every time. Is it a common issue?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Mark.

Check the engine oil after leaving the car overnight, before you start the car in the morning. I also have a1.4 TDi but i've never had the issue of the oil light coming on even though I have an engine oil leak.

I would assume that chaingin the sensor would not be a hard job as i've done it myself in a Corsa beofre and i'm no mechanic.

The reving maybe due to colder starts, how much does it rev up to?

Sorry for such a slow reply, I forgot to choose to get reply notifications!

I've checked the oil before and after use, it's spot on. I'm pretty sure it's just the module but wanted to see if it's a common problem and if anybody knows if it's changed from above or below (hence needing to drain the oil).

It's done about 124k miles.

Last night I think the alternator died. It hesitated whilst cranking and then in the 4 mile drive home the radio started turning off and on and then died, then the power steering went and then Christmas tree lights on the dash. Once turned off it wouldn't crank and half the electrical bits didn't work. I checked the battery and it showed only 2.5 volts!

Apart from the issues I'm seriously unimpressed with the build quality, I've never driven anything so rattly. What has happened to VW's?!
