Just picked up my 6n2 Gti couple days ago and looking to get it insured but this face says it all!!
A couple years ago I had a mk4 Golf 1.8T with suspension, breathing and remap mods all declared for similar money to a standard Polo 1.6 GTi!!
Anyway, I want to know whether any of you guys have had any experience of using 'insurethebox.com'??
They are a couple hundred quid cheaper than the closest quote I got but they require fitting a device which logs my driving which I feel very uncomfortable with especially as I have a Gti
I would avoid them to be honest, it’s basically a company looking for the smallest loophole to void someone’s policy.
Despite the saving in cost it’s not worth the hassle or potential problems if you do have an accident
I have my own Multicar policy with Admiral and the savings are fantastic, unbeatable prices and really really cheap to declare modifications.
I'm 23 (6 years NCB) and its just cost me £705 to renew my Civic Type R insurance which is fully comp & all modifications declared (exhaust, manifold, induction kit, lowering springs) Quotes from Moneysupermarket started at £1200
As above - those tracked polices tend to have a clause limiting the hours of use too. A friend got fined by them for moving his car a few yards when it was obstructing his friends driveway. I'm not sure, but I think he might have pushed it rather than driven.
I'm also with Admiral - renewal will be about £500-£600 to insure my Polo with mods(0 NCB) and another £850ish to insure my 330d (3NCB) - not too shabby for a 21 y/o student IMO! That's with both my parents as named drivers, and their Focus also in the mutlicar policy.
Surprised though that the Golf was cheaper - I've just got rid of a GTTDI (150) and it's £6 less than the BMW, but cost MORE than the RX-8 it replaced - massively high insurance on them for what they are!
What sort of quotes are you getting, if I may ask?
Wow,where u guys live?? I live in n.london(walthamstow) and have just brought insurance with privilege for £950!!
I used to be with admiral but this year they didn't manage to save me money. It's so weird, quoted a day before in just my ownown name and its cheapest then next day adding my parents back onto the policy saves me £200
Aylesbury, Bucks (HP21 7**)- B rated postcode I think!
Insurance is an odd one with parents! I can add both my parents, and it goes down. I add just my dad and it goes up. I can add just my mum and it goes down. If I then add my dad after adding my mum, it goes down further despite it going up adding him on his own! Madness!
P mk4...it's not that bad since you're so young but I must admit-I was shocked at how expensive our cars are to insure!! Considering petrol, running & maintainance costs, insurance totally ruins it.
Just wanted a few responses from current Polo GTi owners. I'm an 18 year old waiter (just finishing off my exams) looking to insure a polo GTi when I'm 19. I will have 1 years no claims bonus and I'm currently driving a Lupo 1.4s (75bhp model) and its costing me £1250 a year third party fire and theft. That's also on a multi car insurance with 4 other cars on the policy with my dad and his girlfriend as named drivers.
Now, a few months back I had a look on some of the comparison websites for insurance on a few cars when I'm 19 with 1 years NCB and I was getting around £1000 quotes for fully comp on a GTi. The other day i had a look and the prices have rocketed all the way up to £3000 for third party fire and theft. Now I made a massive saving of around £2000 for my insurance on multicar. Do you think i can make a similar saving on the multicar insurance on that car for when I'm 19 or do you think my expectations are too high?
Could you not just get some quotes online having pushed your date of birth etc back a little? (If I've misread/understood your post then my bad!, but I'm exhausted!) Personally, I'd hate to buy a car and find it cost too much to insure/justify cos I made an assumption on that side of things!
From what I can remember, I've never paid more that ~£1,300 for insurance, and I got my Polo in my 1st year of uni, so I'd have been just 19 (and 1 month!) too (21 now). I've often found TPFT more expensive than FC - not sure why, but I'm assuming that they're going on the basis that if you care enough to get FC, you'll be a more responsible driver? Pretty lame logic though!
My Mulicar quote took pirces down by ~£100-£300 for me vs. going it alone (£100 on the Polo, about £300 on the 330).
My boyfriend originally brought his GTI (now mine) at the age of 18. He couldn't get insured until he was 19. Literally at the clock hit 12am he was out the in the car lol.
It cost him £150 a month at the age of 19, with 0 no claims, and his mum on the policy
Now at the age of 22 his edition 30 again costs £150 a month, with 2-3 years no claims, multi car with his dad, and me on his policy.
I knocked his policy down by a good few hundred. So of you have a girlfriend or a mum you can add as a named driver, might help take you down a bit. (I don't know what adding chaps to policies are like. jack took mine up by about £50-100 and my dad only took mine down by £10.)

Yeah I tried this numerous times and each time I ended up with a number of different quotes varying from £900 to £3000. I tried to call up Admiral but they just said that they could only give me a quote for my current age.
Having seen that you pay a reasonable amount for your insurance, I feel a little more reassured haha! Thanks!
Just got it confirmed at £631 by Admiral, mods declared with like for like replacement and 0 NCB.
Flux quoted £610 with a much better sounding policy, but then the price for the rest of the families cars went up by more than I saved as I was removing a car off the mutlicar policy.
£900 isn't too bad anyway, it's the limit I consider reasonable with insurance quotes - £3k on the other hand. . .!
If you want a quick car then you have to pay the price when it comes to Insurance
£900 is a very good price to pay having a GTI at 19, I paid £1400 at that age so you should be pleased but that was my own policy in my name hence the price
