Oil breather smoking with BMC CDA

Post by jackson »

hey

Just fitted my BMC to my 6n2 gti and ive noticed when revving at idle (approx 3000-5000rpm) my crank case breather will give out a little puff of white smoke through the filter. Is this normal?

Its not a smoke screen or anything its only a tiny whisp of smoke but just checking with you lot

Also does this mean it'll fail and emissions test come mot time?

Cheers lads

Revving it to 5K on idle is not a good idea for starters mate, the VVT comes in at around 5K too so I would stop doing that for the long term protection of the engine

As for the smoke have you checked to ensure the breather is fitted properly? It should not be smoking but if its not sealed properly it could just be some excess oil burning from the heat of the engine

Check the oil to ensure its up to the correct level

Not good I'm afraid. Your engine is breathing heavy.

Sisters other halfs was doing exactly the same, i compression tested it and pots 1&2 were way down on compression.

How many miles has yours done?

It's done 89670 miles with full service history. The oil level is about half way and isn't black or nasty. I take it the crank breather pipe is the pipe that connects to the standard airbox at the far left at the back?

So if I have low compression I take it that's the piston rings going?

Yes as Rover and Ben have said not good. It should not smoke at all. Check your oil level first but yes as Rover said, a compression test is a good idea
