fault codes for coil pack query

Post by fonzooorooo »

So... yesterday it ran ok. Today its on 2 cylinders (out of 3) ... The car's a '03 AWY on 85K

Fault codes are:

16804 - Catalyst bank 1 below threshold

16685 - Cyl. 1 Misfire

17658 - Fuel level too low

The way I see it, is that the fuel level thing's a lie (that's sender unit related, right?)

then cyl. 1 isn't firing, leading to the cat showing below threshold.

My mind went straight to coil packs, as it's not had any yet, and from what I see on the forums, they're prone to failure.

It's had a throttle body, temp sender, plugs are only (just over) a year old.

I'll whip the plug out later, to test if it's firing... can't do it right away as my small plug spanner's gone walkies..

Is this thought process miles off, or should I really be looking at fuel and vacuum?

I went through 3 coil packs on my 52 AWY in the space of a year. (different one each time)
My car was on about 87k when the third one went.
Give it a try?

Oh how I love owning a Diesel Golf now.

Nice.

Picked up a plug spanner (seems the gremlins have had mine) and no spark... As expected.

I'll pick up a coil pack tomorrow. At least they're cheap enough now!

coil pack changed. codes cleared, and it seems fine. I'm off out for a drive in it this morning. Fingers crossed!

Good stuff!

I ended up buying two and keeping one in the boot, kept me out of the sh*t.
