Reverse gear: knob pops out but stays in gear

Post by brosh »

Hello,

Recently I started having this problem: I shift into reverse and the knob pops upwards and to the right.
The feeling when you take it out of reverse is reminds you of taking it outta first gear because it pops up as mentioned before.

Immediately after that the knob won't move all the way to left for (in order to shift to first/second or reverse again.
I fiddle around with it for a while and eventually it will goo all the way to the left and I can push forward to shirt into first.

The reverse gear itself works perfectly while all this is happening and all other 5 gears work great and smooth.
Ideas?

Thank you.

The linkage mechanism may be broken on the gearbox. Theres a couple of plastic guides that can get worn with age.

Ok and where are they at?
Are you talking about the entire thing that sits under the gaiter (inside the car) ?

No. Its on the back of the gearbox mate where the cables come out of the chassis and into the selector mechanism

I would also take a look underneath the gaitor and check nothing has fallen in there to cause the mechanism to get blocked/stuck. I had a 1P once that caused it!

So basically check all the mechanism from the gear box all to way to the gear knob right?

Correct, though the bit though the channel/bottom of the gear stick you cant get to without having the exhaust off

A visual check should suffice!

The gear selector mechanism has two cables that control the selector

They run from the gearstick to the gearbox through a channel - thus you cannot see them

The bottom of the selector can only be seen by removing the exhaust as its hidden above it
