New member with some problems
hi guys
have owned various vag cars over the last 10 years and have bounced around between vwaudiforum, audisport, briskoda. so yesterday i purchased a 2000 5 door polo gti. It does have some issues though - the main one being ABS and Handbrake light with 3 beeps upon start up. I have had a good read on this forum and many others and it seems that this is quite a common fault. Problem is when I do a scan with my fault code scanner I don't get any fault codes. Is it best for me to just pull the battery and see if the lights come back on?
i've read that these lights signify loss of/no power to the abs control module and or pump and so i wanted to scan to confirm it.
so far i have done the following:
- checked brake fluid level and cap sensor - both fine
- checked 2x green fuses on top of battery cover - near mint condition
- checked the strip fuses (this model has 3) again these are in perfect condition and to be honest look like they've been replaced they're that good condition.
any suggestions would be greatly received. previous owner said battery has recently been replaced

Re: New member with some problems
Its quite possible you have the dreaded ABS module failure. Thankfully its quite an easy fix - guide is here http://www.uk-polos.net/view ... 46#p459146
You probably need to scan it with VCDS or VAGCOM as fault scanners can only pick up so much.

Thanks Alex. I can get my hands on VAGCOM over the weekend so wills can and report back. How do I tell if its the control module thats faulty or the pump? any tell tale signs i should be looking for?
more faults include right side speakers drivers side front and rear arent working? played around with the balance on the radio just incase but they are dead. also from the drivers side window switches i can control the passenger window but the drivers window doesnt budge. as the switches are located in the same place and one works it cant be water ingress so im thinking motor?

Re: New member with some problems
If you get that, its a tell tale sign the solder joints have gone, so its time to fix it.When scanned, it will come up with this error:
01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64)
16-00 - Signal Outside Specifications
The speakers could be a few things. Faulty headunit, but its likely the wiring has split in the door rubber boots. This is very common on these polos - its easy to check by carefully pulling back the rubber boot and inspecting the wires
The window could be the motor - do you hear it click or does it do nothing at all? If it does nothing, it could be split wiring as above, or it could be a faulty window switch. Easiest way to test is plug the drivers wiring into the passenger switch by swapping them over - easy to do once the door card is off.
It could also be the runners coming detached - if you have a 3 door this is a very common problem again and there are repair kits for this

That sounds like the drivers side motor has gone, common on these.

Re: New member with some problems
Youd be surprised - the motors themselves actually rarely fail lol
What actually happens in the grease dries up in the gear housing, and that causes the bearings to stick in the motors
If you split the motor down to its bare components, clean up and lubricate the gearing and the motor assembly, 9 out of 10 times they come back to life
Ive got a stack of broken motors that Ive fixed and keep as spares so I can quickly swap them out should another fail.
You can fix them up to four times before the brushes get burnt and they cant hold a a decent output anymore.

Re: New member with some problems
Sadly not. Ive used all my spares at the moment
The motor, to me, is the last resort
Check everything else first, clean and grease the motor and if still no luck itll have to be replaced.

ok no probs. going to wait until it gets a little warmer then i will tackle the window and speaker issue. will give the vagcom a shot this weekend though as that needs sorting first.

P0304 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

I then did a scan of the abs module itself which returned this
VAG-COM Version: Release 311.2-N
Control Module Part Number: 6X0 907 379 C
Component and/or Version: ABS/EDS 30 IE CAN V004
Software Coding: 15603

4 Faults Found:
00283 - Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47)

any feedback on what the above actually mean and how i proceed ie what i actually replace. i have purchased another abs control module which i will swap out tomorrow. when i cleared the codes the abs sensor didnt clear so can i assume by that, the abs sensor is dead and should be replaced?
also away from the abs issues the first full scan what other faults/replacement parts am i looking at?
any feedback greatly received

Re: New member with some problems
for the 17927 code ive managed to find it as CAMSHAFT ADJUSTMENT BANK.
Now around on its last service the cambelt was "inspected" can i assume as suggested on another vag forum that the 2 pin plugs can often be mistaken and accidentally swapped over. does anyone know the correct colour of the cam adjuster plug on the mk5 polo gti?

Camshaft adjustment is likely to be the camshaft sender
They often fail. It's located just to the right under the engine cover and old ones are grey in colour.

Re: New member with some problems
thanks for your feedback. so imagine if thats your car with the above fault codes. where do you start?
obvisouly ill replace out the abs module tomorrow so hopefully that should fix the 01276. should that also clear the abs sensor faults or will they too need replacing?
im considering getting the cambelt done as its been a while since it was last done. can i replace the camshaft sender easily? or is it worth getting my local indy to replace the sender whilst they do the belt etc?

Re: New member with some problems
another thought actually. could the recent battery replacement have anything to do with all of these faults appearing?
also could fuses be worth checking? i checked those located ontop of the battery and like i said all looked well. are there any other fuses that could affect/cause the fault codes im getting? i picked the car up cheap but im starting to think this could easily get expensive pretty quickly
