Greetings and a couple of questions
Hey as you can see im new here. I have spent an hour or so looking through this site and at some of your cars, im very impressed, gained lots of info already.
I also have a couple of questions for you polo gti enthusiasts, I like many others am looking out for a gti, I previously had a 2000 polo 1.4. I liked it alot, the interior is something i was most fond of. Then i lost that when i quit my job and since then i had my eye on a GTI. I got 3 main questions
1.) I am aware about the pedal box problem and how the wheels are vunerable to corrosion. What else should i look out for specifically? Im used to buying regular cars, and as the gti is a sporty one i would expect previous owners to have maybe thrashed it, what are the tell tale signs of an abused engine?
2.) Insurance is a biggie for me, im 23 so age is a factor but i have been getting very high quotes with many refusing to insure me. Can anyone reccomend a good insurance company for this vehicle
3.) I saw a couple of polos for sale and when i called up they had gone within half a day! The dealer advised me how rare they are getting, is summer a bad time of year to buy this car? should i wait till october/nov maybe?
Thanks in advance for any replies, I have been saving for this car for a long time now.

I'd recommend Tesco or DirectLine. They're really good for younger drivers. If you can get full NCB then you'll only be about £400 fully comp a year for it even if you are only 23. It seems to be the case that age doesnt matter so much these days as long as you;re over 21 with a couple of years no claims bonus you'll be OK.
Thanks for the replies guys
Im gonna call Adrian Flux, never heard of those before but i shall give em a try.
I have the cash for a car more or less, its the insurance thats the worst, my main problem is i have zero NCB, been driving 5 years and the lowest i got so far is 1400 from tesco :\ . Ive wanted this car for about 2 years now, thinking about throwing caution to the wind and putting up with that high insurance price.
On a final note, anyone here got some experties with gti engines? I just wanna know what to look for in regards to a car that looks nice but have been thrashed to buggery.
cheers again

Can't help you with GTi engines but, for insurance, try elephant.co.uk - my insurance is £500 fully comp with £100 voluntary excess and protected no-claims. You can go for a £250 voluntary excess and no no-claims protection to make things cheaper.
I'm 25, clean license, 8 years no claims - couldn't find anywhere cheaper - I spent about 3 days on the internet/phoning various companies and the closest I got was £640 from Direct Line.

I'm 23, clean license, 4 yrs NCB and when I rang up Direct Line I was quoted £550! Then I bumped it up a bit with protected NCB and me Mum on the insurance so it ended up about £720. So £640 when you've got more NCB and a couple of years on me is a bit harsh to say ther least! Oo-er.
On a side note I tried about 7 different companies for insurance, and Direct Line were the best, most others wanted over £1200

Those performance places are s**t, every one ive ever rung up for whatever motor, theve always been a minimum of 30% higher than the cheapest.
I think they try it on, because they are a 'performace specialist', whatever the hell that means.
Mines £500 with all my mods insured, full no claims and protected, But with a £400 Excess. . .which is kinda gay, but that will go down to silly money once im 25 (im 23 at the mo)
Funny thing is, sitting here at my desk, i cant for the life of me, remember who im insured with
haha !

Other problems:
Rear brakes seizing when its been raining. I got told its gonna cost me £105 + vat to fix by servicing the rear caliper.
Electric windows seem to burn out pretty quickly. Wind the window right down and then try to close it. Sometimes it will get half way up and then stop and come back down. My car has had the motor replaced twice under warrenty and its gone again. They want £189 + vat to fix it.
Insurance wise, Im going to give Liverpool Victoria a try this year. Im with Adrian Flux at the moment paying £1047 fc. Im 23 with 3 years no claims and a SP50.
Im going to haggle like rotten this year cos I just cant afford to pay that much this year! Last year they wanted more but I told them I would just have to cancel my insurance altogether cos I couldnt afford it. They came down about 15% more.
