Hello and help me

Post by Oskah »

Hello, I have been lurking around here for a while before registering but I have finally taken the plunge and joined

I Got My Polo GTi in march I wont post pics yet but it was a black three door with the standard corroded BBs alloys, I was not looking for one at the time. I had just sold another car and was looking for something cheap to run around in for a while (60 mile round trip commute everyday) I was looking for a non turbo diesel or a little sub 1.4 petrol but then while browsing ebay looking at Polos I saw Black Polo Gti for sale with 7 months tax and 6 months Mot and as it was nearby I went along to have a look.
It was a nice car with a few niggles (air con not working and windows working intermittently plus one leaking rear shock absorber) I did not have time to any real research on them which is lucky as I would probably have never bothered to go and look if I had. Anyway cut a long story short It drove well and had only had two owners from new with only 80k on the clock which was backed up by the old MOTs so I bought it for £900,

I only intended to run it for a few months and then sell it on as I was really looking for a newer small hatch (I was actually waiting for a decent used Suzuki swift sport to come in to my local dealers as the 60 mile commute is all twisty fast A roads along the A5 in north wales) but I have now become quite attached to her and apart from the corroded alloys she looks very pretty after a good wash and wax and I have only seen one other one around here so she does stand out a bit so I have decided to keep her and this is where my problems start.

I have sorted most things apart from the non working air con, The display was flashing so I assumed it was just a re gass that was needed but after checking the pressure it was found to be ok so I started to look for the G65 sensor and found the end of it had crumbled and was breaking up for some reason (The plug and black plastic on the sensor) so I got a new sensor and plug and fitted them yesterday and wiped the fault codes. so now it does not flash on the clima tronic when I switch it on and it does not log any faults when I run it but the fan and the compressor clutch dont do anything
I have put 12v on the compressor and it kicks up with no nasty noises and I have checked the fan works on low and high speed so I can only think there is a relay that controls them that is furbarred. If there is would power go through the G65 to the relay or would it go through the relay to the G65? If its the latter then the relay works because I have 12v at the sensor if its the former then where the hell is the relay, I can find no reference to it anywhere on the internet and the haynes manual does not tell you what the relays do so at the moment I am stuck and its also throwing it down with rain so I cannot work on the car which is why I am on here :-)

I must say though I have found the forum to be a good source of info and have used it to sort out a lot of stupid little things on the car. I intend to keep her totally standard but in good condition and so far after doing almost 4k in her she has been totally reliable................of course I have just cursed that by saying that

I assume you have checked the air con clutch connector is plugged in to the left of the oil filter?

Thanks for the prompt reply

Its connected (the little wire coming off the compressor) I will need to check if I am getting 12volts to it though but it is lashing it down at the moment and I aint going out in that. Is the cooling fan supposed to run at low speed when I turn on the Air con? (It does in most other Vag Cars I have owned) because that does not kick in either which makes me think there is something controlling the compressor clutch and the cooling fan which is not doing its job

I had exactly the same problem as you mate in regards to the air con. It turned out for me there was a broken connection between the fan control module and the fan which I think was preventing the compressor working. There's a fan control module under the battery tray which is easiest to access from underneath.

The fan control module looks similar to this:

This document was also really useful for checking the pins on the connectors:

Hope this helps buddy I spent far too long trying to get my air con sorted and I couldn't find much on the relay side of things either!

The cooling fan is supposed to run at low speed, yes.

Ok, an update and a slap in the face for me time

I had a look at a workshop manual on the internet to see what everything does and how it works and then went and did what I should have done after I changed the sensor, I re checked the pressure in the system, It had lost around 10psi and took itself below the operating pressure. I dont understand why that wont register a fault but it doesn't, I think it only registers if it drops to 0. so I went and bought a can of gas from Halfords and brought it back up to 28psi and the fan and compressor both kicked in and now I have cool air.
I can only think that when I was taking the old sensor off it was pretty tight and I had undone it a few turns before it got stuck so I sprayed a load of wd 40 onto it and left it to soak in, it must have been weeping past the old O ring while I went off and had a coffee. I will run it like this for a bit and keep and eye on the pressure and if it does not drop again take it in for a re gass so I know I have the correct amount in the system.

I dont know if anybody else has found this but its full of usefull information. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j ... 0616,d.d2k
