Fan belts keep 'shredding'! :(

Post by LAZY LIZARD »

Hi there, I am a new member to this forum, however I do belong to other VW forums for my T3 Campervan.
The problem I am having is with my 2002 1.9 TDI Polo.
Brought this 2 years ago and driven without problem til 8 weeks ago when the tensioner broke. This was replaced but within 2 days the fan belt had shredded. Alternator pulley replaced but again still shredding fan belts.
The belts are actually getting a 'groove' in one side but the mechanic cannot not see any reason why or what to try next.
There are lots of reports on the internet of this happening with the Polos but no definitive answer on how to fix!
Its not been modified in anyway, and was my daily runner - so need to get it back on the road as soon as possible as its costing me a fortune to drive the camper!
I hope this makes sense and Thank you in advance for any help.

Go back to basics and follow the route the belt takes. Its likely something is uneven and causing wear - it only has to be the slightest ridge.
