Polo 9N Vinyl Wrap!

Post by Jay1991 »

Soooo, ive been to'ing with the idea of getting the polo wrapped for a while now. previous owner left the paint/body work in a right pickle. key marks down either side, dents and bird sh*t left to eat into the lacquer. oh and he got in a fight with a bus.. and lost. few qoutes came in at around the £750-£950 mark so i thought id DIY.

lol, anyways i've filled a dent out below the rear window. not perfect but ill give it another going over tomorrow to try and get the line perfect.

sooooo.. so far ive wrapped the boot, bonnet, drivers door, drivers side wing aaaaand wait for it.. the fuel cap! lol.

Door ( cant resize the one of it finished not sure exactly why!)

And the fuel filler cap, modelled by the girlfriend. haha.

its by no means easy but im learning and improving as i go, you cant see any of the imperfections in the photos. theres a mark on my lens but you can only see that in the first two. above the boot badge actually you can see a few creases where it wrinkled from stretching it over the badge, will probably re-do the boot. and probably the door as ive gone over the rub strips rather then taking them off. doesnt look perfect at the end but we'll see. few creases below the rub strip aswell we'll see how i feel about it once its finished.

Cant take all credit so far aswell. having the woman there really did help a bunch. tried it with my pal but we scrapped it after two attempts on the bonnet. two guys thinking there both right trying to team up does not get you anywhere lol.

let me know what you think!

** oh and the dent i filled isnt that one on the photo, ill upload one tomorrow of the big one! **

Looking lovely! :D I'm contemplating doing the same right now, either white or black. Where did you get it/what exact vinyl did you use if you don't mind me asking?

Perhaps we can get a gallery going of DIY wrapped polos

Hmm I think white would be better tbh dude. Black polos are everywhere and white just looks a little bit different. Once I get the windows tinted aswell the contrast should look class. And a DIY wrap thread would be pretty awesome. Can't imagen too many people do it though? Could be wrong.

I used a company called starvinyls.co.uk. And used their 'hexis cast white gloss' @ £13.50 per meter it's not the cheapest one around but it does look awesome and isn't a nightmare to work with. They do do a cheaper gloss white but I think you're saving so much by DIY you might aswell get the good stuff aye.

You think your going to give it a go then ?

Yeah, how many metres did you buy? I will definitely give white a try... will be interesting to see what its like cleaning a vinyl car.

Did you use a heat gun or hairdryer? And does it need an application spray on it to smooth it out etc? Do you pre cut the pieces of wrap it and then cut into the bodywork grooves?

I got ten meters, I pretty sure ill need more but we'll see. I wasted about two meters on the two attempts on the bonnet and the roof/spoiler I think I might do in Black. Yeah I'm intreged aswell. As I loved the feeling of a freshly clay barred / waxed paint job.

Hair dryer was more then enough for the job. I think a heat gun in the wrong hands will simply melt the vinyl so much that you'll end up poking a hole through it. Especially with the lovely weather were having. In the sun i done the bonnet and Wing without even touching the hairdryer.

I cut a square big enough to cover the area, begun applying it, trimmed major excess off but left the final trimming till the entire panel was covered and bubble free.

Nope no special sprays or nonsense.

Where abouts are you based if you don't mind me asking ?

Where did you order vinyl from?

I tint windows a lot but really nervous about wrapping a whole car.. Done countless roofs and bonnets

I was looking at mdp supplies for the vinyl for my first trail car.. Mrs corsa C

Haha cheers guys! shes slowly coming along! hoping to get a load done this weekend, what with the weather being scorching hot one day and p*ssing down with rain the next ive given up for the past two weeks.

i got the vinyl from starvinyl.co.uk its the hexis cast so not the cheapest stuff but its nice to work with! definitely recommend the hexis! how much would you charge to tint the rear three windows on my 9n dude? im around bromley, kent / london area? if your near by? i tried tinting them myself and it was a nightmare! haha. as far as wrapping goes, i think most people would be able to do it, wouldnt say it was easy but its doable. also dont expect it to come out perfect and flawless! its not something you can master by doing it once.

not a fan of matte black atall imo, think its a bit chavvy no offence. see a lot of bmw's done and never looked at one and thought good things! i do however live near an audi q7 in matte grey, looks the sh*t!

Jay1991, do you mind if I ask where you wrapped your car? I've been thinking of doing mine for ages but I'm reluctant to do it outside with the wind blowing everything about haha. Car looks beautiful mate, massive cred to you!

Also, was there a warranty or anything with the wrap? 3M seems to be the top vinyl to go for in terms of it lasting for years, but it's mad expensive!
