G60 Brake Upgrade - Carriers

Post by funlovincriminal »

Been a while since I've been on here, car was crashed into the back of recently, so I'm getting it all fixed up, spruced up, serviced, new brakes etc... & decided to do the brake upgrade

Before I buy, are these the correct carriers to do the g60 brake upgrade:

http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info. ... ts_id=1583

I will update my build thread shortly, lots to add.

Good stuff. I Know, they cost that much for second hand rusty ones on ebay!

Never used http://www.vwspares.co.uk/ before, but hopefully they are ok.

Now I just need the discs to go with them - I believe you can use the standard 6n2gti pads.

Looking forward to getting this car in perfect order again.

I know!

Standard G60 discs are what you want

You may find you need to reshape the outer edges on the back plate of the Polo GTI pads in order to get them to fit snugly into the carriers as they are, in most cases, slightly too big.

Spooky, I was only researching this subject today!

Can anyone confirm or deny that the G60 carrier is the same as a VR6 carrier? I ask as I've got first dibs on a pair of VR calipers and carriers.

The only thing that makes me question it is the fact that the 6N2 calipers are Lucas where as the VR ones are Girling. So I guess a straight swap of the whole caliper/carrier assembly won't work?

I am just thinking about getting the above items now though :?

Sorry for the thread hijack FLC!

Lucas and girling are part of the same group. They just make different parts

Vr carriers are iffy as if for 5 stud they are 288mm and cannot be used with g60 280mm discs

Also the calipers would need unique hoses as the fittings are different

Your best to get the ones above given the price

I thought the 5 stud may make the disc choice complicated. Cheers

FLC, keep us updated on whether those carriers are any good!

I've recently done this to my GTI,well worth doing it looks awesome especially under the standard 15" wheels.

But as Alex says well worth getting the right carriers to save you a lot of time in the long term.

Bradley,

Are your brakes better with the upgrade? I want to do it for fast road/track use and better stoppers are top of my list.

Cheers

I found them to make no difference when I fitted them.

I think it was worse if anything. I did a reasonably detailed thread where stock, G60 and a set of 4-pots were compared and I think the G60s were worst.

They did look good though compared to standard, but not 4-pot good. 8)

I've got them on mine too

The main benefit is the cool faster being a larger disc.

They may brake a bit better but it's somewhat placebo

For track use they would be an improvement.

Heat dissipation is a good one for track use 8)

Does it add much weight with the bigger discs? Unsprung weight is bad! Add lightness!

If I'm honest my old discs were so warped that anything was an improvement.

I don't think there is a great deal difference. Then again as Alex mentioned they are bigger so I imagine they would take longer to heat up than the 256mm discs.

Mine are with OE pads and discs but i think with braided lines, decent drilled discs and some nice DS2000 pads they would be a great setup.

Upgrade done, will be updating my thread soon with pics.

I've only driven it 1/4mile with them, so can't comment on performance but they look great!
