Gear Box Oil Leak- not the selector shaft seal

Post by WSMRT18 »

Hi all,

My Gti has developed a bit of an oil leak from the gear box, its not the selector shaft seal.

Its had a little leak which I have been monitoring for a while around the blue circle (see picture) but recently its started getting a lot worse and making a rate mess of the drive!

I have noticed oil along the join where the green circle is but that doesn't seam to bad judging by the marks left on the wood underneath.

A lot of the oil seams to collect on the bottom of the wishbone mount circled in red but I don't really understand how its getting there unless its dripping down blowing backwards on to the components and then collecting there and dripping off when I am parked up. I am pretty sure it is gearbox oil, also the boot lid gets specks of oil on it which makes me think its dripping down and blowing underneath the car.

Anyone had a similar problem? For the time being I am just topping it up regularly as that's my cheapest option but I dislike having any oil leaks!

Any input greatly appreciated

It could well be a combination of the selector seal and the driveshaft seals. I had a leaking driveshaft seal on mine and replaced both sides when I had the box off to do the clutch

Gearbox oil smells different to engine oil, so it's quite easily identified.

Mine is also leaking quite bad! Leaving oil on the road now. I've been told its the drive shaft seal and the centre seal. But when I've checked the box oil level it has been okay! The only annoying thing is it drips down on the exhaust and stinks!!

When I first got the car 18 months ago I had the selector seal replaced looks ok at the minute, i'll have a look at the driveshaft seals but when I was last under there wasn't anything obvious.

I can sometimes smell the oil when i'm at a standstill to!

Thanks for the responses :)
