K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
Hi Guys,
Today on the way home from work less than 500 yards from my front door the heavens opened, the road filled up with water so quickly it was unbelievable and my polo sucked up a load of water and I have spent the last four hours trying to get her going again. I have got her to start now and she is drivable but she doesn't sound very healthy. I'm pretty sure its not mis firing and it doesn't feel down on power vag com doesn't say anything but its making a nasty tapping noise which increases with engine speed? I was trying to avoid the water as much as possible and was coasting when it happened very little water actually got in I think.
Any ideas what this could be? I need my car for work but I don't want to cause any long term damage driving it but I don't really have a choice.
I'll try and get a video up maybe tomorrow the noise appears to be coming around the inlet manifold.
Thanks for any input
Will

Video would be useful, It pelted it down on the way home from work too and i couldn't believe how little grip the road surface had..

Took it to two garages though, one said I had possibly bent a con rod and I would need a new engine totalling £1100
I don't think its really worth spending 1100 but then again its my pride and joy! Not sure what to do.

Water ingestion is very bad news for an engine. Unlikely to be top end damage, most likely bent a rod or 2.

A way to check for a bent con rod yourself is to remove the spark plugs and put something long down the plug hole. (I've used a chop stick in the past) Manually crank the engine over so that every piston has come up to top dead centre with the chop stick pushing up through the plug hole. Make a mark on the chop stick when each piston is at tdc and see if you have a low piston. If you have, that's the one with a bent rod.
Hopefully it'll be fine but don't lose the chop stick in the cylinder!!!

Yeah turns out it is serious and its going to cost to much to warrant getting it repaired, think I'm just going to have to sell it as spares and repairs

Or source a second hand engine off fleabay? It's a shame to break up a car over that.
What was the damage?
What was the damage?
Re: K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
The engines dont seam that expensive its just the labour costs pushing it up to over a £1000 I like to do most of the work on my own car but I dont think I have the tools or the know how to do an engine change.
First place suspect the rods and the second place who stripped the head said its coming from down in cylinder 1 getting it back tomorrow hopefully I'll find out more from them.

Let us know the results mate
Re: K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
Well they have stripped the head down and after checking the valve train they have told me its coming from deeper down in the block in cylinder 1 and repairing it will cost in a best case scenario of £1000.
Its come at a time where my tax is about to run out and the mot is due next month so maybe its time to call it a day on her and sell her. If I had the time and tools to do the work I would have a good go myself.
She is probably worth more in parts sadly.

Re: K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
there was no need to have it stripped down to be told it wasnt the head!
Re: K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
Your right it sounded deeper down in the engine but I was clutching at straws really, thought it was worth a punt instead of the 1100 the first garage had quoted!rover220 wrote:there was no need to have it stripped down to be told it wasnt the head!

Gutted for you mate.....
Re: K&N Typhoon in an actual Typhoon = baaad neews
so, are you gonna sell whole car? Are you gonna leave it for parts? I'm looking for gearbox, so if you thinking about to strip it down for parts, PM me

I'd be interested in front and rear bumpers if you do split it.
