9n Steering feels funny after spring and wheel change.

Post by mgvickery »

Hi There,

I've got a standard 9n with no mods and recently upgraded from standard steel wheels to the 16" VW Barcelona's that were an optional extra. Straight after I took it to the garage to get a service and MOT so didn't really have a change to feel what the new wheels were like. I was then told the near side spring had snapped and so both front springs were replaced but now I have the car back the steering feels very light and at low speeds the wheels don't return to center on their own when turning a corner.

Is the light steering and not returning to center due to having wider (205) tires or could it be a tracking/alignment issue?

Thanks,

Most likely a wheel alignment issue, when you dismantle any part of the suspension it's near impossible to bolt it back together in exactly the same place, a few mm make all the difference. I have mine down every year now, after poor alignment ruined two front tyres in 5 months!

I took the car to a wheel and tyre company and the tracking was really knocked off so after setting it correct and two new front tires it feels as good as new. cheers.
