Remote key problem

Post by Aquavalver »

Not long after I bought my GTI in July 2012, sometimes the remote key wouldn't lock or unlock the car. I took the key part to find out what batter it took and got a new battery, but when I put the key back together, it started working fine again. Then a few months later it started not working sometimes again. I put the new battery in and it was mostly fine until recently. It has gradually got worse, but seems to lock it more than it does unlock it. The main problem is with it not unlocking it, every time I want to unlock the car, whether or not I want to atually drive away, because of the alarm, I have to quickly start the engine before the alarm goes off! I don't have a spare key either

Anyway have any ideas as to what the problem might be? The actual key buttons or inside gubbins? VW want £64 for the inside gubbins, £52 for the coding of it to your car and another £52 for the actual key-all prices + VAT!

I was actually thinking of upgrading to flip-key as well. Has anyone done this or got a new key before cheaper than buying from VW?

My key did the same, started randomly not working. So I upgraded to flip keys and all was sorted, you can unlock the car from 80metres away now range has improved 10fold.

1. Bought a key off ebay (it has to be a specific one, not ANY key will work. I'll try and find out which u require.

2. Bought some blank flip key blades off ebay and got them cut on ebay by taking photo of my existing blade!

3. Put immobiliser chip from old key into new key

4. Put it all back together and coded it to work using vcds.

Easiest and cheapest option is to just replace the remote part of the key. The transponder for coding the immobiliser is in the key half of the fob so isn't affected. Pairing the new remote to the car is easy - it's documented in the owners manual

Remotes are cheaply available on eBay or from hickleys.co.uk at a fraction of the dealership costs

As alex says easiest & cheapest way is just to replace remote part of the key.

If you want to convert to flip key, there is some research that needs doing - for the life of me I can't find the exact type of keys are required. Me & my pal from work did it a while ago, I can try & dig out the info on Monday for you.

There is a good guide on ebay from a seller which describes key types

http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/VAG-keys-VW-S ... 053/g.html
If you are looking for replacement remote it MUST have the same or equivalent part number and frequency, otherwise it will NOT work.
I.e. you CAN NOT use 1K0 959 753 G as a replacement for 1J0 959 753 DA .
In some cases 1J0 959 753 AG/1J0 959 753 CT can be replaced by 1J0 959 753 AH/1J0 959 753 DA i.e. late Bora, Golf, Octavia MK1. But there is no rule.

I've taken apart both my flip keys:

Part Number is as follows:

HLO 1JO 959 753 N

Other keys will work, but the one above definitely works.

Once you buy this key from ebay all you need is

1. a blade cut
2. your transponder chip putting in it
3. Code to your car using vagcom/vcds (I can find out how if required)

Looks like ebay will be the cheapest option then. I was watching a load on ebay and paid less than £10 each for second hand flip keys.

Sure, i got the instructions from here

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/v ... ching.html

The above link shows couple of methods, it was the first that worked for me

Gather ALL the remotes you would like to match. Insert one key in the ignition and turn it ON.

[Select]

[46 - Cent. Conv.] [35 - Cent. Locking] (whichever is applicable to the car, as found here)
[Adaptation - 10]

Enter channel "01" (May be channel "21" in some Audi models).

[Read]

This will display the number of currently stored remotes in "Stored Value".

Enter your total number of keys up to a maximum of 4(including any existing keys) in "New Value"

[Test]

Verify that the number in "Test Value" is correct.

[Save]

Then press and hold (for at least one second) the UNLOCK button on the fob, at which time it will be learned. If you're programming more than one fob press and hold the UNLOCK button on the second fob for one second, press and hold the UNLOCK button on the third fob for one second, etc.  You have a total of 15 seconds to do them all.

The car may give you some sort of acknowledgement as each key is learned (lights flash, horn beep, etc.)

(My gti let out a beep when it was matched)
