Could really do with a bit of advice

Post by trevb »

Hello there, new to the forum, was looking for a newbie thread to say hello before I jumped in but cant seem to find one...........or am I just being thick lol

So here I go,going out to look and probably buy a 2012 polo gti next week, drive a 09 plate leon dsg petrol fr at the moment but its killing me with the fuel bills,as I do tend to have a bit of a heavy right foot,i also have to have a auto due do my missus needing to use the car as well, and the daft bint only has a auto licence :x

So what should I be looking out for,i've had a look through some threads on the board and it seems there is a issue with oil consumption, but to be honest the thread has like over 70 pages to it,so a little info on that would be nice to have

This is the car i'm going to look at........ http://www.beckevans.co.uk/results.asp? ... &MaxPrice=

Any other info on known problems with the car would be handy to know before I go and take a look at the car

cheers people........ :D

I honestly believe the oil consumption issue is overrated. When I first had my gti it went through a couple of litres of oil in the first few thousand miles. I now top up a litre every 5k or so if that, well within VW's recommended oil consumption parameters . Modern engines like the 1.4 TFSI in the polo use thin fully synth oil which burns up. A small capacity turbo/supercharged engine = oil top ups.

If you are interested I am selling my Polo GTI, it has lower mileage than the one your looking at (28k) and a much better spec. Happy to negotiate a good price for you. It will have 4 new tyres all round and will have it's third service completed prior to sale. In warranty until November this year. I have sent you a PM.

Well - as somebody that had to battle with VW to get the engine replaced, I have to say that in my opinion, the oil consumption issue has not been overrated, the oil consumption thread is testament to this.

However - a late 2011/2012 model should be ok as a lot of the early problems would have been addressed by then. The main issues were with 2010/2011 (60/11 plate) cars, but even then it did not affect all cars.

Cars after May 2012 had the updated CTHE engine but some of these still required a flash update to the ECU and breather pipe mod.

Don't let it put you off though, they are brilliant cars, it is such a shame that some of the early cars had the ownership experience spoilt by this problem.

Im not a stranger to a bit of oil usage,my fr probably uses a litre or so every 6/7k which apparently is the norm

Well, not to sure if I have done the right thing or not, mainly due to the issues some people seem to have with the oil usage and dsg gear box,but ended up with more money in my pocket for a car than I first thought I was going to have, and as the dealership offered me a px deal on the FR I really couldn't turn down,i have just bought a brand new GTI.....................
