Haha I know, was washed yesterday and its already filthy! The fact I have to drive up and down country roads to get home doesn't help as they're always covered in mud!

Oil light came on yesterday, checked the dipstick and there wasn't any on there, so I put a litre in and it moved it up just below half way, I'm thinking of booking it in to get an oil consumption test? After hearing all the stories with these I'm tempted to contact the previous owner to see if he had any issues with it and to see if VW have done anything on the car yet.

Hi Ben,

Yes - I would contact the dealer in the first instance, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, your is a 60 plate (like mine) and these were the suspect ones with high oil consumption. Your dealer will know if it has been in for recall work regarding this.

So the car has been to a dealer and is now on an oil consumption test, I have to take it back in 600 miles, I have a feeling it will fail as I had 2 weeks and within this time it the level dropped off the dipstick completely, anyone know what happens next? Do they attempt the fix or do they realise by now that the piston fix doesn't work and fit a new engine?

Ben - have a read of the last note I put on the using oil thread, http://www.uk-polos.net/view ... &start=960

They wont automatically give you a new engine, it will be several consumption tests I fear.

My car dropped off the dip stick in around 1500 miles when new now it is using hardly any oil at all. I top it up about every 3-4 months which I think is pretty good fro this engine took around 5000 miles to settle down

Took about 2000 miles from new for me (2013 model), caught it before the oil light. A litre topped it up. Will probably need a top up at it's first service, but as I've paid for servicing for 3 years the dealer can foot that bill.

Just keeping an eye on it.

I believe you two have the newer engine in yours as they are newer models, mine however is a 60 plate so it suffers from the oil issues.

On another note I'm now half way through the oil consumption test (300 miles) I checked the dipstick as soon as I got it back and it was at the top, now its half way down, I know its not linear but thats surly way too much still to say its only 300 miles into the test, a few friends have also told me its blowing out smoke during some set offs.

What type of motoring are you doing?
Mine's pretty much all urban short trips and it does tend to smoke a bit until it's warmed up.

I do a bit of everything really, but like I said you have the newer 13 spec model with the CTHE engine, this one doesn't suffer from the oil consumption issues like the earlier models did, the smoking from mine is the burning oil.

So I've not got my car back after failing the consumption test, they have fitted the oil breather pipe and put me on another 600 mile consumption test. The service guy told me if its still using to much then the engine will be replaced, after reading on all of the issues still after this fix I'm guessing it'll be going in again fairly soon. I also told them about my DSG cutting out occasionally and they told me it was down on voltage but not enough to warrant a new unit.

Update, the car is now on its third and final oil consumption test, VW have done an update to the car and the gearbox as I have been experiencing issues with that too. They acknowledge that there is a fault with the engine but have told me if they don't follow the steps VW Tech tell them too then the engine won't get replaced, so its going back in another 600 miles once it presumably fails this test to have the new engine fitted. I also told them of some gearbox faults but the technician told me that since they take the readings when the car is idle they won't be able to find any issues with it, but he said he would tell them about it not being able to find gears and see what they say.

Then get them to take at drive with a tester plugged in... Can't be that hard for them to do.

No issue whatsoever with my 60 plate GTI, not one. Have had it for 14 months now- not used a drop of oil. Runs like a dream. I just treat it well and it seems to treat me well!
