MK3 GT seat repair

Post by polonuts »

hi I have just bought a Mk3 GT interior (old slyle black) and have fitted it to my car. I am chuffed to bits with it, but the drivers seat raised squab has collapsed  (the bit you park your bum on)

does anyone know of how to repair this DIY style, if so, how the hell do you do it as I have no idea

on my seats, the upholstery is pulled tight from the top and fastened at the bottom, you may want to keep an eye out for some bent spikes that hold the upholsery to the base, if done right you may be able to take the upholstery off to get to underneith, you could get away with using some foam or prob easier to search breakers for a similar style seat off a mk2/mk3/scirocco and put your covering on it. or find a gt seat to replace it with

if you tell me what differences there may be between a GT seat and a CL seat, i'll go take a butchers while I'm putting the new seats in this eve (infact i'll still have a spare (dirty, busted) set in the garage after that, for reference).

when you say collapsed, in what way? it's just not firm any more, or it's actually fallen down?

the seat squab (side portion) feels as tho it has been split in two over the seat frame (no doubt from a lardy arse previous owner!). the difference between the GT and CL are the GT sides or squabs are built up like a recaro seat

So GT seats are to a CL, like CL seats are to a Fox? Cool.... :)

I think your only recourse there is to get a new foam filler or whole new set of seats, unless it's something to do with the (rather threadbare) metal frame...... or you can fix it by doing something fancy with the frame or the sponge itself.

i'll have another gander after a short nap...

The seat cover is tightened by a wire and some spikes through the material underneath the seat. Undo these and you'll be able to get your hand up inside the seat. Get some kind of filling material (I used wool on my GTi seats, but I'm sure there's something more appropriate that could be used), and stuff it up inside the seat. Make sure that you stuff it into the fold in the foam which creates the bolsters at the sides, rather than stuffing it between the foam and the seat cover as this will make it look like a rather ridiculous sock. Make sure you tighten the wire again as much as possible to hold it all in shape, and you should be good to go.

Get some grey GT seats cheap and use the foam bolters in yours.
