Not at all - by atrocious I mean relative to discs. Definitely a massive difference and worth the money.zebraman wrote:If the handbrake was "atrocious" with the rear drums, then it must have been defective.dl27 wrote:I've replaced rear drums with discs from the 6R polo - they work perfectly and braking is so much better now, especially the handbraking which was atrocious with the drums. I've fitted the parts belonging to South African 1.6 6R polo - (ETKA code PR-1KK). If anyone needs a list of part numbers, please let me know.
upgrade rear brakes

Re: upgrade rear brakes
Hey guys,
Just got a pm from one of the users and can't respond directly due to this forum's rules. Anyway, this may be of use to someone else as well, so here goes:
1) Was it difficult to do the conversion?
Not really, the most difficult part is getting the old handbrake cables out (yes, they need replacing if you're changing to discs). The rest of the job is just bolt on, really.
2) Was it worth it?
Absolutely - been driving for more than 80 000 km since the upgrade and honestly, the braking action is awesome.
3) What are the part numbers involved?
Here's a list of part numbers which should be good for 1.4, excluding the callipers.
6R0 611 763 B - brake hydraulic pipe/hose left rear
6R0 611 764 B - brake hydraulic pipe/hose right rear
1J0 615 601 N - brake disc (need x2)
1K0 698 451 J - brake pads
6R0 609 721 C - handbrake cable 1644mm (need x2)
If you have access to ETKA, just look for parts for the rear axle, with PR code PR-1KK.
If you have anything more powerful than 1.4, look for equivalent parts from a 1.2TSI or 1.6TDI.
Hope that helps those considering this upgrade.
