Aftermarket radio question

Post by antoin1984 »

Hello all,

My first time visiting this site.
It seems to be the best one for Polo related questions.

I just bought a pioneer single DIN head unit for my Polo 6R 2010: http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audio/c ... oCIVbw_wcB

My question is this:-
Does the polo 6R only take double DIN head units when not OEM?

The reason I ask is I can't seem to find a single DIN fitting kit for it anywhere.
I bought this, which I am waiting to be delivered: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-EOS-Passat ... OU:GB:3160
I also have bought a pocket and wiring harness separately as it seems you can't even buy a 'Full' kit anywhere for this car.

Will I need to return the head unit and exchange it for a double DIN one?

I'm getting very confused as to what I need to do in order to replace the crappy RCD 210 stock radio, there are no instructions or tutorials anywhere and I'm getting stuck!

I've never fitted a radio into a car before and didn't know it was this difficult.

I know how to remove the stock radio and connect the other one up, just not sure how to get it mounted correctly and *exactly* what gear I need in order to do so!

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Think thats the wrong you have ordered, thats for installing a double din. Try this one
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FP-17-03-VW-C ... 2a2dfd8568

Essentially you need the single din fascia, wire harness, aerial apater. Its all in that kit above.

Only other thing is you need to run a ignition live, as there isnt one on the existing stereo wire loom. The existing stereo uses a signal from the Canbus to turn on and off with ignition.

I tested the fuse panel for an empty ignition live using a voltmeter and installed a piggyback fuse, clean and simple

Thanks for the info so far.
I was going to actually buy that but was put off by the fact that A) it doesn't list a Polo 6R in the list of compatible vehicles and B) it doesn't have a mounting cage or brackets or anything.
To be honest, I think it will be easier for me to just go and return the single DIN and exchange it for a double DIN.

6R uses the same mounting kit and adapters as a mk5/mk6 golf

what exactly is the ignition live thing for?
Is it so that when I turn the ignition on the radio will come on or is it to trick the radio into thinking that the ignition is always on so it works even when the key is not in the ignition?
I've read into it and just got more confused.
Also, I don't want to have to buy another piece that may be wrong, plus I don't have the detector thing you have either. This is becoming a bit of a pain in the arse and I'm having to send things back that I've ordered left, right and centre.
plus, just having to wait on things being delivered, then going to the post office to pick it up is a pain too. There are no good car audio stockists anywhere, only halfords.
Think I might just return the radio and be done with it.
Also, this forum.. what is up with having to wait like half a day for a comment to be moderated, it just slows everything down, just adding to my misery :D
I think I'm done. refund please.

Ignition live is required for the radio to know when the ignition is on/off

These cars use canbus which is digital, and unless you use an adapter that creates an ignition live, aftermarket radios dont know when to be on when the keys in

As for this

I would suggest you get an RCD510 or similar from eBay - straight swap, and will give you the functionality of a good headunit. The only thing you'll need to add if you havent got it is an MDI kit for an iPod, or use an SD card for your music.

Thanks for the info.
So, what will happen if I don't buy and fit an ignition live?

If you dont fit an ignition live with an aftermarket radio (ie anything non VW), it simply wont work. The ignition live is a switch live which basically provides the on/off signal to the radio. Without it, the radio is in a permanent off state

Got it in eventually.
The sleeve that came along with the pioneer slotted into my fascia, then the pocket and bent the tabs up so the sleeve didn't move, miraculously the radio just slides in and the fascia and sleeve hold its weight.
Had to get a guy at a local car audio place to tap a fuse and do all that work for me as I don't have the knowledge or the tools!
