Anyone done this themselves, any tips?

It's easy mate, there's an eccentric nut on the tensioner pulley. As you rotated it, it slackens the belt, just watch your fingers as you don't want to let go with them in the way. What noise is it making? Check the alternator pulley with the belt off for play as it could be a bearing squealing.

glad it's easy - thanks for the info.
it's not squealing just a sort of noise like metal grinding around and strangely like sleigh bells sometimes (mainly when wet). i guess it just sounds old in essence.

That could be the tensioner bearing failing - not uncommon

apart from the obvious (belt and tensioner) are there any other parts i should renew whilst doing the job?
