1.0 70hp - Any Good

Post by cjp2k »

Hi guys, my mother is looking at a new car, she likes the polo (has one previously as a company car 10reg)

Is the 1.0 any good, she's looking at a 5 door SE and does mainly town driving with the odd trip on the motorway,

I drove the 60hp version and found it flat but nowhere has the 70bhp version locally to try

Cheers

I have been driving a 75hp Up (same engine, but lighter car) for the last 12 months. It's great around town, but I think you will find it hard work on dual carriageways and motorways. I tried the 60hp version before I ordered and that was even more feeble, but not massively so.

It's also not as economical as you might think, because you basically have the accelerator welded to the floor all the time. The new 90hp 1.2 litre engine in the Polo is supposed to be great. Given the small difference in price, I would go with that.

In any event, after a year living with my Up's feebleness, I have ordered a 150hp Polo Blue GT!

Thanks, I will see what deal they can do on a 1.2 as well, its down to budget and got a cracking deal on the 1.0, like I said 90% is round town for her, but I do occasionally take her car if I cant get my 520 off the drive in the snow

Don't get me wrong, the 75hp 1 litre engine is OK. I live in northern France and have used the Up to go to Paris and Brussels on several occasions with no problem. It is remarkably refined (i.e. quiet and stable) on motorways, but pressing the accelerator in 5th above about 60 seems to have no influence on the speed you're going :)

I tested this engine in the VW Up! Nice for city and around, engine OK for this purpose.

I've never tested the 1.0 engine at all but have had 2 1.2 60ps engines. These were good at the time but now I have got the 1.2 TSI 90ps and it's great. I wouldn't even dream of getting a Polo without one in now - it's nippy, the turbo is excellent (good at motorway speeds as well), and better mpg all makes for a better all-round package.
Just food for thought...

Hello hello,

Yeah I drove the 70ps 1.0 too on a test drive and I couldn't bond with it. You've really got to kick it's head in to get something out of it, great for ticking along the motorway and the round the doors but I wouldn't feel to comfortable with it. I coughed up the extra cash like Wolfi and went for the TSI. So much more enjoyable to live with.

Cheers,
Al

Good call. I know this is for your mum, but how many people do you hear saying "I like my car, but I wish I'd gone for a less powerful model" :)

Good call. You won't regret the bigger engine.

My wife picked up her 1.2tsi SE in Mayan Blue last Friday. You really won't regret the better engine, it's great fun to drive and I prefer it to my golf.

indeed :)
if you can get a stronger engine, go for it.

and pray to avoid the breaking down of anything in a TSI, it will hurt

I used to be a big Golf fan and worked my way up to a Mk6 GTI a few years ago. They have become too big, though, and I much prefer the Polo, which is now the size that the Golf was originally intended to be.
