VW POLO STEERING WHEEL UPGRADE!

Post by IZVVC »

Hi there guys I'm looking to upgrade my steering wheel from the standard match edition one with the non leather and non multifunction steering wheel, to one off the golf.

Im just wondering if it will fit into my car?
And will i be able to use my existing air bag with this new system.
is it just a job of plugging in the old wires into this one?
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks!

What car do you have, ie is it a 6R or 6C?

They have different steering wheels, and the steering wheels that will fit from other VAG cars will be different.

In that case, the steering wheel pictured won't work with your existing airbag.

That's probably from a Golf 7 isn't it?

With the right airbag, I'm sure it could be made to fit, but would likely involve a new airbag loom, and a new steering wheel control module and coding, but no guarantees.

Safer probably to get a different 6R wheel, the GTI one would fit, but again you'd probably need a different airbag as the airbag mounts are different to those on non GTI models.

You could get a 6R wheel with the controls on the left hand side only, but you'd still need a steering wheel controller and wiring/coding to make it work.

It's not that straightforward I'm afraid.

I think that even with the standard 6r MFSW you'd need a new airbag. Still, you could sell the old one, and probably not come out that badly financially. If you don't have the highline cluster I think that the GTI wheel would be a bit redundant...

I bought a nice steering wheel off ebay for my Polo. Seems to be off a higher spec car, lovely leather with a nice wee bit of metal trim on the bottom spoke. The airbag fitted straight in and got a mate to clear the warning light on the dash. There are no multifunction buttons to worry about and I didn't consider straying into another models set-up.

Did you get the steering installed?

here's the pictures of the 2014> Polo Steering wheel, Airbag & Harness -

As for the harness you can find the part numbers here -

If you know the wiring of your vehicle then you can modify your old airbag coil harness to suit your requirement. Depending on your model you may need to change both slip ring and the combination switch if you want the complete functionality of the multifunction. If you are okay without having some buttons working then you could use your old slip ring, combination switch and even the harness but might need to alter connections on the airbag coil harness.

Hope this helps.

Does the light in the buttons on the steering wheel work with this mod?

Actually some of the mods i was attempting is after reading your posts on polovw.it, its only later I came to know you had posted all your mods on tigerstyle too and that made it very easy for me as i don't know Italian. I should be thanking you! :)

I thought only VW dealers had license to use Elsawin? there are copies on aliexpress for about $100 -2014 ver I dont know if they are legit.
I use ERWIN online version only, they have offline programs too but i guess they need olders versions of windows to run.
