Passenger Courtesy light

Hi, while installing a basic alarm on my daughters 2002 9n polo ( 3 dr ) I noticed that when opening the passenger door it does not activate the courtesy light only drivers door does. Car got broke into recently and would like to get it secured so is it just a case of fitting door switch and connecting it to drivers side or should passenger door put light on as standard.
Any help appreciated
