With a few weeks away from me getting my new GTI I jumped at the chance to test drive one. My dealer phoned to say that a demo model had come in and did I fancy a spin.

It was white and a manual, looked very sharp. Pretty basic kit inside though and no sport button.
Obviously the car needs to be driven for awhile so things still a bit tight. I have to say that I was expecting to really notice the difference in torque from my current DSG model but to be fair I didn't. Maybe if it had a few more miles on it and had the sport button I would have.
What was noticeable was that it takes tight bends so much better than my current 1.4 GTI . A marked improvement!
Start stop technology included will help with fuel economy. Also has the blue energy app thingy on screen aimed at improving driving efficiency etc.
This had mirrorlink and at last bluetooth phone connectivity as we know.
Steering wheel felt great and looked the part too. Steering is more responsive than the previous model.
LED lights look great.

For me I'm pleased I drove it and the manual felt good but not enough to ditch the convenience of DSG.

Yeah I agree about the wheel! Awesome steering wheel, feeling and driving position. On par with the Cooper S Except maybe the driving position which feels a little taller on the Polo

i like the idea of the dsg but couldn't justify the loss of nearly 50 ft/lbs of torque and no option of a map at a later date.

Let's be honest this is a bit of a make do model until the really new Polo GTI appears in few years time. Torque will be the same for both the DSG and manual by then I'm sure.
No more 3 doors by then either probably.
Whichever is chosen its a cracking cheeky little motor. Enjoy everyone. :D

It's swings and roundabouts isn't it really.

What you lose in torque, you gain in quicker changes.

I must admit, I do really like the DSG boxes, I'm a bit of a convert.

The other car in the household is a manual, and I find it a bit odd to drive these days!

Plenty of people, myself included, have mapped their DSG 6R GTIs with no issues, so I wouldn't worry too much.

tbh the only auto i've ever driven was a RR sport and didn't like it (can't do left foot braking so had nothing for my leg to do)

problem is it's the same box off the 6R and they mapped to about the same torque as the manual with a vw map. (which is probably going to be a bit higher with some super unleaded)

tbh i'd never buy an auto road car no matter what so i'm firmly in the manual camp lol

This isn't a GTI specific question, but do the eletronically folding mirrors fold in automatically when you lock the car?

No - as far as I am aware (similar to a Scirocco I also own), you have to manually turn the switch to get them to fold back in.

Strange, as apparently on the Golf and Leon they do fold in automatically. I've still not seen anything concrete about the Polo though.

My BlueGT electric mirrors fold in automatically when you lock the car, and unfold when you turn the electrics on with the ignition. They can also be manually folded with the mirror adjustment nob.

That's it. To be fully automatic would surely be the most practical. As you know I drove one on Saturday but alas I didn't notice. It was basic spec.
I will send myself to the back of the class!

I park my car in garage at night and have to fold my mirrors in to keep over to one side as not that big. If I folded the mirrors in via the button inside the car then locked it, would they open when I unlocked car or only when I use the switch inside again, hope this isn't to confusingly written lol
