Thanks. I also remember what it is. Even my 72 beetle has such a bearing sleeve.

It's quite an operation getting the gearbox out
The subframe has to be lowered a bit, but two large bolts just broke off. They had to open up sheet metal to remove the nuts and welt new nuts on the chassis
Also another bolt broke off from the steering column

Hope it's ready tomorrow.

The subframe had to be lowered!? Who have you got doing your work.....?

The subframe doesnt have to be lowered at all. Ive changed over 10 polo clutches and never done that.

Its just all the bolts around the gearbox that hold it to the block, the gearbox mount, the left side engine mount in some cases, starter motor and both drive shafts that have to be disconnected, then it slides to the left and drops out.

That may be in your case, but I have a LHD car so that's quite different!
If you guys have to fix the abs pump issue, thats easy, but in my case I have to remove the main brake caliper

I see - forgot you were LHD :P.

Didnt realise they changed the design that dramatically on the LHD models - i know certain bits are of course relocated but didnt think they'd make it that much more difficult

Got my gti back! It's quite a difference! Clutch operates very smooth and lighter. Clutch pedal squeak is gone. The shifter does not quite move as much back&forth in 4th gear as it did before. The dynamo is shiny looking as is the oil pan. Hope it stays dry. It was quite a job, the catalytic converter and steering house(?) also had to be removed.

The bill will be, as we say here, 'peppered'
