Non-genuine cable for VCDS coding?

Post by LeeT96 »

I am wanting to know of a cable that I can use for simple coding for my RLine without having to pay rosstech prices, I am wanting to do simple things such as needle sweep, etc...

Ross Tech put a huge amount of effort in. It's only fair we pay for it. As the new polo uses a new protocol it's not going to be supported by fakes for a while.

Is £270 about the going rate for a Ross tech that will work with a 2015 polo gti?

Totally agree with above!

There are less accomplished scan tools around at a lower price, but their lack of "usefulness" ultimately reflects their price. If you want something that useful you need to pay for it.

I'd reckon so, if that is what you have discovered via official re-sellers of VCDS.

Iv got the "cheaper" one and it does everything i need it to. Changes setting, resets warnings, reads warnings etc. no way i was paying silly money for a cable iv used twice so far. If it was a everyday tool fair enough, but most of us will turn on a couple of settings and properly never use it again

It will work on the 6R not the 6C.

Is that the one you showed me mate? I agree with you, all I am going to do is use it if an error comes up, and use it to turn needle sweep on and that's it - if I were to even use it once a week I would maybe buy the genuine one but I wouldn't ever be able to justify the price

I really don't see the logic in just because you're not going to use a genuine cable enough to 'justify it', it's ok to effectively steal the software?

There are two ways I can think of that aren't illegal.

First, you ask on here if somebody with a genuine cable/software who lives near you would be able to make those adaptations for you.

Or, you buy a genuine cable, use it for what you want, and then sell it on. Genuine cables hold there money very well, and overall probably cost similar to a pirated cable.

Having said that, if you're keeping your car a number of years, the cable will probably pay for itself many times over.

I just find it odd that people will shell out £20k+ for the car, but not £270 for a genuine cable....

I agree with all the comments about ripping RossTech off, most people do not like being ripped off - do they?

If the VCDS-LITE worked for your cars then why not go down that route - but as said that will probably not be the case if your car needs the latest version which looks like being 14.10.

Over the past 13 years of owning/running a (wife's) Polo 9N I have used VAG-COM then VCDS 28 times, last time was yesterday mainly due to ghost faults or crap S/W in each case, if I did not have that scan tool and the knowledge to fix/ignore these faults I would have needed to take the car to a garage and get hit for around £35 > £90 for each "check/clear fault codes". The score for my previous Passat B5 was a lot less but that mainly would be due to that 2000MY car having fewer smart controllers than the 2003MY Polo 9N. My current S4 B8 has I think 6 pages of stuff on its VCDS printout so again has many more smart controllers. I can't see her "on its way" Polo 1.2TSI SEL being any better in as much as it will spit out faults at the most inconvenient moment.

In short, I'd reckon that I am buying her another Polo only because I can support it with VCDS, maybe that is not what people want to hear though!
