New bearing not fitting

Post by Me9141 »

All,

Hope you are well.

Am having both front bearings replaced on my 2003 1.4 tdi.

Had the first set changed and you could hear the bearing scrape against the cv boot while you drive.

Mechanic says these bearings are 3mm too long. So bought another pair from a reputable dealer who again checked against vin and reg number.

Mechanic says these are the same and to rectify I should buy new cv joints.

Can anyone help with this, cat had been off the road a month because of this.

Thank in advance, any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that you are not having this work done by a main dealer's friendly mechanic or a VAG indie? I hope that your mechanic recognises that most if not all modern cars are fitted with GEN2 or so bearing sets, and these need special care and special tooling to fit them to the car and enjoy a long fault free service life. None of the "good old" whacking with a hammer etc!

Yeah your right not at a dealer. But I did have the bearings put in by someone fully kitted out garage myself. It was put in by a press not a hammer and piece of wood job.
