New polo gti any alternatives to paying for sat nav?

I have a new polo gti 6c on order however I don't want to pay £700 for the sat nav. Does anybody know if it would be possible to use the car-net-app connect that mirrors my phone to the screen and use the maps off my phone as a sat nav?

It depends on your phone. But in theory, yes. I think Car-Net-App-Connect is supposed to be for exactly that purpose! I would recommend trying your phone in a car before you order though, to make sure it all is compatible.

Thankyou! I thought It maybe could work I have a new Samsung galaxy note 4, so think I'll be able to run it through androids google maps.

I have an Iphone and while I can use maps i much prefer Vws own.you'd have the leave the screen on the satnav where as on the inbuilt one you can switch between stuff and still have the directional display between the dials

carnet can be sticky at times too,few times no my phone will constantly connect disconnect and it seems only leaving the car for a long time will fix it

I'm not sure that VW would have deliberately provided a £100 extra so that buyers don't have to pay £700 for sat-nav.

I had ordered Mirror link on my first BGT but VW stopped supplying it between ordering and supply. When ordering the replacement car I ditched that and went for the Sat-Nav (with credit for Mirrorlink and discount it cost me just under £500) and I have to say that it works really well and is certainly worth the cost IMHO.

Cheap integrated sat-nav is a holly grail for many of us, but I don't think the Car-Net-App-Connect delivers that just yet.

I can see where your coming from it would be a stupid move by VW to provide a sat nav for 100 quid when they would much prefer the 700 pound sale I think I'll bite the bullet and just buy the navigation system thanks for your help

Well, it's the excuse they used when the first model year of new Fabias didn't have factory satnav as an option, and instead had Mirrorlink!

It's not as good a solution as the factory system, no. Especially as many satnav apps (Google Maps, for example) don't hold the entire area in the phone's memory. Instead the route is pulled down from the server each time you set it, which could chew up your data pretty quickly. That's fine if you have unlimited data, or can do it over wifi while at home, but more of an issue would be if you found a road closed or missed a turn in an area with poor phone signal. Having the maps stored locally, displaying stuff in the MFD, and never having to rely on somewhat sketchy mobile signals (especially if you were to go abroad- given that the Discover system includes European mapping, not just UK!) definitely makes it a superior system. But is it £600 superior? I don't know. I don't use satnav enough for it to be worth it for me. If it were cheaper, at a price more appropriate to what satnav is, then maybe it would be. But considering that on my phone, a Nokia Lumia 930, Here Maps provide full street level mapping for countries across the globe for free, and you can just download the country you want, I'd say £700 is excessive. It's basically just printing money. The maps are the same (hell, VW Group, through Audi, have just bought Here along with BMW and Daimler) and all VW have to do is some software changes, maybe a slightly beefier processor, and a GPS chip. The processor, GPS chip, and mapping licence probably cost £50 at the very top end (given that components for cars are generally tougher than phone components).

This Kenwood system may also be worth a look though.

I've ordered my GTI with the nav pack and also the app-connect. In theory yes the app connect should do the mapping for you. You should be able to use Android Auto with your Note 4, which i hear is a lot better than mirrorlink. Gives you a full interface and allows you to switch between maps and music etc.

Having said that, as someone above said, there are drawbacks to running off your phone such as having to download the maps using mobile data. I'd say if satnav is important to you, get the full whack £700 option, if its only a once in a while take a punt on the app-connect. Android Auto (and Apples Car Play) will only be improved in the months and years to come IMO. £100 isn't too much to be an early adopter of it

When I click on the app connect option on my head unit (which I didn't order) it says I have to get a code at the dealership to unlock so I think it may be possible on the newer week 22 onwards head units

To be honest i don't use the sat nav on a daily basis it's only really when I go somewhere unfamiliar maybe once every few months so paying 100 pound and taking the chance with the app connect could be my best bet

One thing I've noticed is that if you plug your iPhone into the USB and set its inbuilt Sat-Nav going with directions to where you want to go then the spoken commands are relayed through the speakers of the car even if you are listening to something else - so there is some notice off a course change but you'll still need to find some way to hold the phone so that you can see the Sat Nav on the phone.
