I finally managed to give the GTI a decent run out over the past two days, so here's some observations.
I got around 40mpg average on a motorway run with it occasionally going higher. That's better than I've had on the commute so far (28mpg).
It's a great motorway cruiser, comfortable and easy to overtake with.
The engine feels more like a larger capacity, naturally aspirated engine - power seems quite linear and doesn't have the obvious tail off you get with a turbo. Not sure how much off this effect is down to DSG changing gear for me though.
You could probably do without the Sport button although I've not had chance to test it properly. Tried it today on quite a smooth but up-and-down road and the suspension was a bit too firm. On a flatter road it might not be too bad.
DSG is great, even without using kickdown, you get great acceleration and the gear changes are seamless.
