1.2 TSI with Bluemotion grille

Post by LeeT96 »

I have fitted my bluemotion grille back to my car and when I have been out for a drive it has been REALLY warm under the bonnet. I have enough oil and enough coolant but it is really warm (even the bonnet prop). I can see the air intake is to the front-right of the engine bay (when looking onwards at it) but it would usually be behind the RLine grille with the gaps so air is getting in. My questions are:

Will my car be okay with this grille fitted? The bluemotion car has the air intake in the same place with the same grille?

Is my car actually taking in air but I just can't tell due to the grille?

Is there any where I can try redirect the air intake to to ensure it will take in cold air?

I had the grill on my non-turbo car for quite a while and was okay but with this having a turbo I am unsure and worried.

A diesel simply has a lot less production of rest heat compared to a turbo petrol engine. A TDI takes miles and miles to come to temperature while a tsi is hot within the first minutes.

I wouldn't be worried though. An engine works well around 90 degrees Celsius.

Thank you for the quick reply. I am worried it may work over 90degrees!

Will I also see any performance/MPG issues due to the air filter not receiving as much air (if any air)?

Do you believe that the air filter will be receiving air anyway?

If the air filter is not receiving an adequate air flow the engine will not run, if it runs normally it must be getting enough air. Try blocking off your nose and mouth, deprived of air you will die, your engine is exactly the same.

keep in mind that the engine gets air from a tube that is located at the top of the grille.

for open grille, the open area is to open up the flow to the upper part of the radiator
for a closed grill, still the opening for the tube to the engine air filter is still the same size.

the 6c grill is also almost fully closed and still the engine has enough air.

So do you think I'll be fine - I can see the air intake to the airfilter but I'm not sure if it's getting air or not as I can't see where it will be getting it from.

I am not sure how the air intake or tube will get the air though, I cannot see where it will get the air from?

Yes but what about with the Bluemotion grille? Or is it going to be very bad for my engine?

I was going to question the answer "the 6c grill is also almost fully closed and still the engine has enough air." - but today I had a look, and that answer was correct!

your car will be perfectly fine with the bluemotion grill. screw it on to have a look, there is plenty of space for the air intake.

Looking at the pictures I can see that this may be a bad idea - but I like how it looks.

Do you reckon it would be best to remove?
