I think that in its kindest interpretation, that "not intelligent" posting should have been taken as a reality check. Unfortunately any thread that indicates that it wants to change a car's performance towards that of an model higher up the range, will always get that response as VAG are not dumb, why would they bring to market a version of a car that you could improve easily for small money when they also sell that better version. Same answer to "I want to change my A/C from manual to Climatic" - lots of small mod questions will attract reasonable answers, so no one is really against someone making their car better, it is just that some car engines do not respond to small money mod'ng - and this is one of them.
Edit:- in my stupid mind, if you want better performance or looks, that are available higher up the model range or from another marque, the time to make that call is before you buy the car, using a fixed budget you could then buy an older car and have what you feel you need. I have done that many times in my motoring life, friends go and grab a brand new or nearly new low model car and then get annoyed because I have bought a slightly older higher model for the same money, you pays your money and takes a chance. Three examples, my 2 years old Escort Ghia 1.6 suited me better than friend's new Escort 1.3L, my 1 year old VX Cav 2.0 GSI 4X4 suited me better than friend's new VX Cav 1.6L, and my 18 month old Audi S4 suits me a lot better than friend's new Audi A4 2.0TFSI - that is all!
1.2 60hp Match performance upgrade.
Re: 1.2 60hp Match performance upgrade.
So are you saying there is no mods for this engine and it cannot be modded? No vag or aftermarket mods available for the 1.2 either because Vag are not stupid? .... cough on the latest scandal
I think I am starting to wonder just what this forum is for if we cannot discuss mods openly, what is classed as a reasonable question to get a reasonable answer? Just to add mods do include retrofitting which is Vag!
Still would love to know where people are getting the higher end models (tsi as suggested) for the same price as a 1.2 60hp with little mods. I cannot find a tsi under £10k but could find the 60hp for £6-£7K. A bit of a difference no matter what you say. It is not as simple as just sell a car and get a better one nowadays.
I rest my case from my first comment

Re: 1.2 60hp Match performance upgrade.
I'm not saying all people should sell their car if they wished to mod their car, I myself have modded my car quite a bit, both performance and cosmetic. What we're saying is that there is just not much power to be had out of the 1.2 through mods, an air filter is likely to give you 2-3 bhp max, same with an exhaust, it's not worth it.audiobull wrote:Well it was not intelligent at all otherwise everyone would simply sell their cars and buy a better model!!. Insurance is possibly something that needs to be taken into consideration when people buy a 1.2, they may have been given it as a first car or by their other half, fuel consideration might be something to thing about and the repayments on finance may not have allowed for a better model.
I did not comment on the actual thread because I am interested in the answer too. At a guess a k&N replacement filter, exhaust and other bolt on mods might be available, I am sure the lupo or ibiza guys n girls would have a much more reliable answer then what you have supplied on this thread. The OP asked because he would have hoped for some answers from people that actually had done mods or knew what mods could be done.
As I type a tsi is nearly £4k more then a match. Some how I cannot see mods being over £4k unless you go absolutely stupid on mods, the OP is not wanting Ferrari speed out of the polo simply make it faster.... and sound better (see first post).
Like I say your answer was not intelligent compared with all the other answers and all the other threads I have read so far on this great forum.
A 4k difference between a 1.2 N/A and tsi? Have a look at these links
£5890 for a 1.2 tsi
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... &logcode=p
£5050 for a 1.2, similar age and milage to the tsi
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... &logcode=p
Spend 300 pound on a remap on the tsi and gain ~30bhp
Spend 300 pound on an exhaust on the N/A and gain ~2-5bhp
In my experience this forum has been a great place to learn about new mods and the majority of members have modded their cars to make them their own, if there were worthwhile options on the 1.2 engine there would have been advice on the options to explore
Re: 1.2 60hp Match performance upgrade.
God knows where you got those results but I cannot find them on autotrader! I am comparing under 2-3years old, less then 20k miles with the same equipment. ac, full elec windows, fog lights, media extension, bluetooth etc etc. Certainly not looking for older models with high mileage on them otherwise I would look at a reasonable gti.
Although you may not agree that the 1.2 is any good, mainly I expect that is due to you being in a far superior engined model BUT there is thousands of the 60hp models around and this question will keep coming up if all you say, is sell it and buy a better one as people will not actually be getting an answer. Every car manufacturer and model has a little basic model but there is always mods out there for them if people want them.
The 1.2 60hp is not even the most under powered of the polo range. the 1.0 is?
What is the weight difference on the 1.2 ally engine over the 1.2 tsi cast engine? 100kg?
Cams, induction, exhaust, remap and some coilovers. Yes your be looking at around £2000+ but would be a very fun car with very little weight addition if not losing weight on the 1.2 60hp. Yes no turbo but no lag and a lot less weight.
Maybe I am just shocked at how very little we all know about the cars now like we did 10 years ago. You could buy all sorts for a 1.1 5 door Saxo so I am surprised no one has even heard of mods for a 1.2 polo no matter if they think it is not worth it!
I am not comparing the 2 only using the Saxo as an example.
If a tsi is only a few hundred pound more then I could possibly understand but they are not unless your happy to drive around in an older and higher mileage model tsi.

Also I know you will never get the power increases as you would on a turbo but what did we all do before you could remap them? The N/A is an example of what needs to be done

Seriously, I could say that you have lost the plot, but do you really have one? Emissions regulations mean that slapping on a better means of fuelling the engine, is not going to work nowadays - well not like it did back in the carb fed engine days.audiobull wrote:Also I know you will never get the power increases as you would on a turbo but what did we all do before you could remap them? To me you are pointing out the obvious, ie if you want a bit of performance with a fixed budget, then you need to buy something that is older - that does not make that car that you could afford to buy an inferior car - unless you have a bit of "plate snobbery" - now if that is the case, then you are stuck with what you have bought and you have either changed your mind about what you want, or have realised the limitations of that car. There will be lots of folk running around in their 1.2 60PS Polos quite happy that they have bought an A>B car to keep them mobile - and that is good, they have achieved what they set out to, I can't quite see what you are trying to achieve here given that engine's limitations.
