Pretty sure carplay blocks navigation apps. Saying that I would kill to get carplay on my 2014 Polo

It works well, but of course provides no more functionality than a £80 Garmin Satnav. However to me it was worth it to have it built in.

I did get a £50 discount thus had it installed for £550. I could have done it myself and bought one off eBay for £475, but due to potential warranty issues with the MIB2 I thought it best to let the dealer fit it. It took them 3 attempts the get it right mind. First time no TMC antenna fitted, then they didn't set the dip switches properly for the HD Polo display, then they fixed that but lost sound!

Works fine now though.

Worst issue is that you can only alter volume on the spoken voice via the touch screen and not via the normal wheel or steering wheel controls.

The multifunction display cannot display directions but that doesn't bother me.

I have installed speed cams and they work well. You can fit the unit just under the glove box so retain access to the SD slot.

Considering that the Garmin mapping and user interface is generally much better than most OEM units, I'm happy with it. However it does seem like an older generation of the Garmin UI.

Thanks for this info Humbermart.

Can you still use park pilot and have iphone connected while in nav mode?

Thanks in advance

Yes all other functionality remains the same. You can listen to any sound source whilst you view the Nav. The parking display works just fine and auto switches between Nav and park as needed.

I guess both boxes could be mounted under the glovebox but you only need one to access the SD card. Not sure if the looms on the interface box are long enough to move it too far from behind the CD player.

I did mine ok from PocketGPS (although you have to leave the card in the SD slot on the Kenwood unit).

I'll have a go at updating mine tomorrow and record each step so I can report back.

Has anyone found a way to play movies on the navigation system for 2015 Polo GTI?

I'm sure CarPlay works with Apple Maps. Of course, that's not exactly the best option. I'm sure the reason why is that Apple want you to use their 'solution' rather than anyone elses.

Android Auto certainly works with Google Maps.

I got the Kenwood Garmin unit for free, I would say it is not worth £599, even £200 is pushing it in my opinion. Mine was fitted really badly by the dealership and I ended up refitting it all myself. The unit is secured with velcro behind the carpet under the glovebox, the dealership had just left it loose in between the carpet and the firewall sitting freely. They had left a bundle of loom cables loose there too. I can easily access it if I need to update the unit. I found I was not getting a reliable GPS signal so I took the dashboard side cover off to uncover that they had fitted the antenna onto the A Pillar/weld point chassis of the car LOL! So I routed the cable behind the rubber around the trim pieces up to the headlining and placed the antenna on the windscreen in the zone for radio frequencies. It is nicely hidden away with the mirror unit there and there are no wires showing! I now have a perfect signal. This was easy for me to do as I have wired my Dash Cam/CCTV in the same place, did the two jobs at the same time.

In use I find the unit to be the same as any off the shelf £60 Sat Nav but its a real necessity for me to have it built in. My previous car had it built in and I have got use to the practicalities of having one in the head unit.

I have to say i agree with Pearls i had the same experience with the fitting of this unit & finished up redoing it myself.I put my GPS on top of the glove box under the dash & surprisingly i do get a good signal in our area, the dealer had stuck it on top of the dash & it looked a mess.
If you can see a copy of VW s fitting instructions the dealers are told to fit both units on top of the glove box in the case of the golf & passat but in the case of the polo there is not room on top of the glove box so put it behind it & secure with ties & velcro .What we finish up with is the unit shoved up the back which soon becomes hanging down because no ties or velcro were used.At the end of the day you finish up with a unit that works well enough through the info screen but is no better than a basic sat nav & in my opinion not a patch on TomTom live.I new most of this info before i paid out my £599 so more fool me.

Hi everyone, this is my very first post on this forum.

Exactly the day of your last messages I bought a brand new Polo Match 1.0 75hp.

I thought the SatNav would've been included on a modern car, but with my surprise I was informed about the "retro-fitted Kenwood" optional instead.
Didn't think twice to add it, (never had one before, using Google Maps, wanting to stop to have my phone hanging around the dashboard), not really questioning price or "installation".

However, after using it for 1 month I realised that £599 is like an iPhone price. On top of it, I've never had a look at satnavs in the shops, and when I did had a look at Garmin's, I saw that for £150 you can have it with:

- a camera on the back,
- newer UI (really noticeable)
- software updates (via cable)
- additional vehicles and voices (via cable)
- lifetime maps updates

Exactly. You spend £599 and you are forced to buy every year maps for £75 from the Kenwood mini site (https://kenwood.garmin.com/kenwood/site/latestMap).

This doesn't make sense. For that price you should even add the speed cameras added for free.

Am I missing something? How can an integrated (old) version of a Garmin be 4 times more expensive than an up to date, expandable, updatable, external one?

I cannot even add a Polo icon as a vehicle!

Re: Kenwood Sat nav upgrade - traffic

Post by Dave_C »

I've just got a new Polo Match with the Kenwood sat nav fitted; the traffic subscription updated OK. I planned a route yesterday mainly on the A14 through Northamptonshire. All the way the icon remained grey, the unit was always "searching", and at the end the trip it was reporting no reception for 1hr 48mins.

I queried this with the dealer, who told me they understood that traffic information was not available unless a route was planned and that there was traffic congestion on that route.

I'm doubtful. If that's true how can the traffic function be tested? It would be interesting hear from anyone who has traffic working OK on their GVN60.

I also have the same issue with the Kenwood sat nav. I use the a1m daily, I mostly get a no signal or 1 red bar. Very sporadic and unreliable in my opinion.
