Our polo has a few electrical idiosyncracies anyway - but also I have noticed that the heater fan seems to speed up when reverse is selected - it then goes back to normal when taken out of reverse !
I am not too worried about it but wondered if it was normal ?

This is normal. It automatically puts the fan into recycle when reversing to prevent exhaust fumes entering the car
