Ok.. A lot of comments back
I feel i would scrap the BlueGT transplant idea which is fine - was just a silly idea.

However.. I know my car has low milage.. 55k.. However my car does sound like its 'losing its voice' if that makes sense.. Feels tired.. No punch left..

Wasnt thinking of changing the engine within the next hour, was just thinking of something to do way in the future when I think to trade her in.. Just wondered how easy it would be.

VW have removed all chains from new vehicles and have replaced them with belts, which are old tech. But there is no issues with previous tensioners!

It's the belt that is new tech, introduced by Glas and GM in the sixties. Timing chains date back to the dawn of motoring. :)

Glas held the original patent, they are now following takeovers mergers etc buried deep within VAG, as of course are Bentley who used a shaft and bevel to rotate the overhead cam back in the day.

Notwithstanding al that I hope you can reach a satisfactory settlement.

^^This.

I am surprised that they are having problems with timing chains. They have been used it cars almost since they turned a wheel. While down the years I have heard tales of timing chains becoming loose and noisy but they normally very robust and last the life of the vehicle. If they are having problems it down to penny pinching, poor design (again penny pinching) or quality control. The fact they won't "man-up" and admit there's a problem is pretty disgusting, but speaks volumes of where their priorities really lie.

This is interesting reading.

My engine made that sound on start up every time.... I just thought it was the engine sound..... I had even had it in for various services and repairs and my mechanic never picked up on it.... :?:

As does mine on occasion!!

I think I've reached the point where it's beginning to nag at me a little. I like the 1.2Tsi, It's look, how it drives, how well it goes for a small engine, it's a well rounded small car. Not particularly great in any respect but good at doing what it's supposed to do. This was supposed to be my "Keeper" and I had every intension of running it for the next 10 years (bought it new in March 2011) But I really don't want to be running a car that's going to cost a fortune in running costs or repairs as it ages. The notion that if it does go bang you're totally at the mercy of VW as to whether they man-up and admit they got it wrong or as a goodwill gesture maybe meet part of the costs. Which to be blunt just isn't good enough.

I can't actually find a workshop manual for the car as yet. Haynes do one, but sod-law it doesn't cover the 1.2TSi engine.

Does anyone have any idea what the part numbers are for the "updated" chain, followers, tensioner, etc. are????

Anyone??

OK a quick question about VCDS. Is VCDS capable of measuring the Cam/valve timing?

I guess my real question is, if I want to have my chain checked for "stretch" other than actually taking the car apart and measuring it. Can it be checked via the software??

I managed to find a part number for an updated cam chain cover that has addition sections inside that theoretically "catch" and elongated chain before if can jump off the sprocket.

03F 109 210 D This should be common to CBZ Skoda/Seat 1.2 Tsi (I checked mine and it is 03F 109 210 B)

The 1.2tsi is a very noisy engine, especially when cold at first start up. Mine does it and rattles from everywhere. I just put up with it. In all honesty tho this car was meant to be my keeper as well. But I'm looking at going back to a fiesta or focus St at some point now. Not over impressed with the polo myself. Not the best handling, lots of body roll, and don't get me started on how easy the paint chips and marks. And the engine just always sounds like it's being pushed to hard. As soon as you stop moving it rattles, mainly the fuel lines which is stuffed foam down and tried cable ties to hold out of the way. I may consider the new gti but will wait for more feedback on them after they have been out a bit longer. I love the looks of mine which made me swap my mk2 focus. But I wouldn't say it's built any better so far

I'd have to agree with a fair chunk of what you've written there. The 1.2 TSi is fairly noisy/clattery at start-up, especially if the car has been standing for a few days. (what worries me is what is normal and what might indicate there may be problems at some point in the future??) I'm surprised how little of that noise get's into the cabin when driving. I've also had the rattle from the fuel lines, again fixed by packing the lines with a little foam. You shouldn't have to do it, but it's not difficult little fix.

I'm of the opposite opinion when the car is on the move, I don't think it ever really sounds strained considering it's only 1.2. Then again I'm past my first flush of youth and don't push-on with my driving like I once did. I agree the car is quite soft in the corners but again that sort of suits me. This too was supposed to be my "keeper" I'm not financially in a position to swap the car again, so was hoping the care would be trouble free. I think some of the problems with Polo are down to it simply being a new model with new engine, the odd niggle sort of goes with the territory but the cam chain issue stinks of poor quality. I don't think the build quality is as good as the 9N, not sure if that's because of where or how they put together.

While using my GoogleFu. I happened find this little self study overview of the 1.2/1.4Tsi engine, for anyone that's interested.
