Hi
I have a brand new GTI, which I'm very pleased with but for one problem: there's a constant noise like air being blown over the top of a beer bottle. I've tried to figure out what's going on and it seems that:
- it starts about 0.5 miles into a journey and happens on every journey
- I think it's coming from the offside front wheel - if I lean forward and to the right of the steering wheel the noise is louder.
- seems to lesson under braking
- is there at all speeds above 10 mph
- it's constant
I've been back to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. They tried swapping the wheels round, checked the tyre pressure and looked at the brakes. They didn't think there was a problem with the wheel bearing. They said that one of their sales team has a Polo GTI and gets the same sound.
So, I thought I'd post here and see if anyone else had the same problem (and how they solved it). If no one has come across this sound before, it does suggest there is something wrong with my car and I'll need to go back to the dealer.
It's a shame as it's a great little car, but this noise is driving me nuts.

Re: Strange Polo GTI Problem
Never known anything like that from mine in 8 months, 5K miles.
I do get a constant mild 'scraping' sound from the back brakes that can be heard at low speeds when you pull away. This does seem to be common for some owners and to me must be the pads trailing on the discs.

Re: Strange Polo GTI Problem
Thanks for the reply. I know the brake noise you mean, but you're right - this is different. My guess is that it's a wheel bearing, but it seems a bit soon for one to fail - the car has done less than 600 miles.
