Steering knock

Post by Poopaconk »

Hi,

My now 800 mile old GTI has a knock in the steering at low speed, which can be felt and heard. It's at its worst when reverse turning but can also show it self when moving forward slowly.

Anyone else experienced this?

Mine has had it since new, its not audible but its a small clunky feeling when at slow speed forwards or reverse when manoeuvring into a space. I'm unsure what it is.

I have an old Polo that did the same (not the GTi I also have now). Took it back to VW but after they replaced the suspension strut under warranty it was still there, so I took it to an independent who showed me it was a massive ridge on the inner surface of a front disc. Essentially, on first moving off, changing from reverse to forwards, or vice versa, the pads would bind slightly against the ridge before releasing. The car also used to brake unevenly.

For a car of your mileage I doubt it is this, but it could be the pads moving slightly in the calipers if they're not fully working properly.

Thanks guys,

I doubt it's the brakes to be honest as they seem fine in all respects; it feels more like a strut issue, but what do I know :)

I'll take it into a dealer at some point, probably to be told it's fine or they're all like that sir......

I had a similar conversation about a gearbox noise in a Honda once. When I told him if that was the case could he make the same noise in my other, identical, Honda they decided to fit a new gearbox under warranty. Made me laugh.

I had a steering knock from about day 7 from new, the dealer diagnosed a steering rack fault which I wasn't convinced, anyway they fitted a new rack at 2 months old and I still had a knock so they ordered a column which was fitted at about 4 months and it cured the fault
