I'm currently on my second Golf Gti and as there is only me and the wife (no children) and I don't do a huge amount of miles, I've been thinking about down sizing to a new Polo Gti.
I also like the idea of having something a little smaller that I can 'wizz' around locally with hopefully a big smile on my face. Don't get me wrong I love my Golf's, but I want something to put the fun back in my driving.
Has anyone else considered or has already gone in this direction?
Thanks in advance for any words of advice.
Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
Re: Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
Looks wise they are very similar. Performance wise pretty much identical.
Only difference is a little more space in the golf.
The polo has a very shallow boot due to the spare wheel and battery being under the floor. So check that if its required.

Re: Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
I was in a similar position to you Mark. I was on my 3rd Golf (a mk6 GTD), and didn't need a car as big as the Golf, nor was I doing the mileage to justify having a diesel, so I downsized to the Polo GTI.
For me, downsizing also resulted in me switching from a succession of 3 diesel engined Golfs to petrol. I don't regret my decision, either from a downsizing perspective, or switching to petrol. I find the Polo GTI suits my needs pretty well. Performance is good, and it's a bit like a shrunken Golf - I think the interior is quite similar to my previous mk6 Golf and the exterior has some of the styling cues of the mk7 Golf. Yes the boot is small, but as I don't often carry rear seat passengers, if I've anything large to carry, I just flip the rears seats forward.
I've read in various reports that it's very similar size-wise to the mk2 Golf, so I could say this is the mk2 Golf GTI I always promised myself but never owned!

Re: Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
I've always wanted a golf gti, driven it many times, but the price has always been too much. So when my wife changed cars this last time she wanted to try the polo gti. Thankfully she bought it and I actually prefer the polo over the golf. As it's smaller it feels faster and I don't see anywhere near as many polo gtis as golfs. It also looks like a smaller version of its big brother too and attracts many admiring glances.
If I didn't need something with a reasonable boot, I'd buy one for myself. Alas I'll have to make do with occasionally borrowing it when she wants it cleaning at work instead! Go test drive it, it's great fun.

Re: Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
I looked at the price of new Golf Gti's and thought "so how is it that much more expensive then the Polo?"
Top Gear did a 20 car hot hatch test and 0-60 the Polo was QUICKER than the Golf Gti!
I've parked near a mk5 and 6 Gti and they look about the same size. In fact when I went to the dealer I had to actually "look" for the Polo Gti as it looked so similar to a Golf.
I do think the Golf Gti mk7 looks just right in my eyes but the Polo isn't far off and everyone I meet seems to think it's a Golf anyway

Re: Golf Gti vs Polo Gti
A Polo just about fits in my garage, a Golf just about doesn't. Car is cheaper, insurance is cheaper and I don't have to fork out for residents parking permits.
Difficult decision?
