Just run a guy up about a mk4 Polo SE 1996 N reg with 38,000 miles in excellent condition. (At a garage)
The car has no service history. The guy said the previous owner got it serviced at local garage.
Do you think i should travel the 50 miles and go and see it?

it does sound abit dodgy, it means its done less than 5k a year. but you never know it could be true, my car is a 98' reg and when i bought it last year it had 29k on it which is pretty much the same. lucky it had full VW service history. i guess its worth the look, just follow all the checks that either autotrader gives (in the front of the mag) or parker does online (www.parkers.co.uk), you know like shiny steering wheel etc. you could end up with a bargain, how much is it?
you could also try this which pettsy originally posted its an RAC car checker
http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... hlight=rac
itll tell you about the amount of owners the cars had, if its had 1 or 2 go have a look if its had 10 id leave it!

cool, thanks
Or do you think i should go for a 1.4SE P reg, in great condition with 73,000 miles? This one is from a family run car garage, they offer:
-All cars come with warranties, parts and labour
-Full PDI (pre delivery inspection) check
-Over 100 different mechanical, electric and cabin checks on each and every car before delivery.
-Fully valeted before delivery
What you think?

I'd personally never buy a car with such a high mileage, but that's just being fussy.
As for the low mileage one, history is almost essential when buying a car from an unknown person, so there is potential that it's been clocked or not serviced properly, though I am quite cynical!
Why don't you try buying a slighty newer model with a lower spec, for example a CL or an L? Your budget could probably get a lower mileage and newer model with the lesser spec'ed Polos!

i wouldnt really bother with hi mileage cars either. i bought a golf with 70 odd on it and it was in and out of the garage all the time. i did drive it to destruction tho, i put about 25k on in its first year and ragged it alot. if you drive alot get a low mileage one, if you only put on say 5-8k a year mileage shouldnt matter to much. just make sure theyve changed the cambelt at 60000, if they havent get them to do it before you buy it.
if i were you id take the gamble and look at the low mileage SE, maybe get the RAC or AA to check it for you. the SE's fatter one piece bumpers are ace, same as the 16v's. alot of people with the less well equipped models want to upgrade their bumpers to SE/16v bumpers, so save yourself the effort and get them already on the car.
